Where does Snapchat fit into this whole mess? I’m on iOS but regularly get asked to install it to talk to people.
Snapchat is my personal most hated messaging app, it annihilates battery life and the amount of “friend request” spam I get is insane. Its news is solely clickbait as well.
Had my account a while. Never speak to anyone
Lots of people do. My partner has friends he only talks to on Snapchat. A lot of folk at work also do - they do tend to be younger though.
I missed the Snapchat phase… but only just. I have it but never use it. I like the idea of it, and as you play around it can be super social and such, but it’s full of “influencers” now and fake setup Snaps that just ruined it.
But as for chatting yep, a lot use it just for that function.
It’s definitely an age thing - my partners 17 old son only uses this, and he’s not the only one. I think basically 25 and under, between that and Insta, you’re sorted messaging wise.
*unless it’s your mum in which case iMessage obvs
I believe this is changed in 17.2 with an arrow in the top right to take you to the last unread.
Beeper mini and cloud connecting to iMessage is. Using it for the 14 or so other chat apps such as WhatsApp, Google RCS, SMS is working perfectly so BAU for me
I can’t remember you pointing it out but I just gave it a try and it did work.
I would say the bigger issue is that it’s so discrete that I never actually noticed it in all this time. Typical Apple minimalist design.
I definitely think the default should be to resume where you left off. You always hear people complaining about how Twitter and Instagram don’t preserve position, and those are algorithmic timelines. In messaging it’s actually far more important.
Ultimately, I only have one group chat in messages so doesn’t affect me too much.
Hard disagree, but it is just preference. For me, the difference with a messaging app is that these are specific chats which I’m more invested in.
Would be interesting to see what’s more popular.
- Preserve position within chats
- Always resume at the bottom
Plan B if Apple’s plan of opening up iMessage is RCS that’s not compatible with Google’s RCS , they’ll get the message data this way.
Could be a boon for people who “hate” WhatsApp but need to keep in touch with its users .
And that’s that then…
Sounds like not enough people outside the US use iMessage for them to bother doing anything.
Good to see committing to this so quickly after the spec being released.
Still haven’t used RCS on my iPhone yet as I only get SMSs and no actual chats with real people.
I think the only problem it really solves is group messaging in the US where green bubbles are a nuisance .
It’s now less ‘Google’ and more ‘RCS Universal Profile’ (GSMA standard)
So the standard is now ready. Next up: implementing it into the messaging apps.
