Merchant Data Corrections

Thanks for posting this, I’ve just checked and my Showcase Cinemas ↔ Costa Coffee issue above has been resolved.

They are, it’s just fairly intermittent

Unlikely but tbc

Not sure if this comes under merchant data corrections but I tapped to make a Unicef donation in Body Shop in Nottingham today. It’s a separate transaction to the purchase, you tap your card twice.

The I got rather worried when Monzo summarised my trip to The Netherlands.

It seems that although I never left Nottingham and paid in GBP at a Body Shop card reader, it logs the transaction directly to Unicef in Den Haag.

That’s not linked - it’s just that they’re processing the transaction a bit weirdly - the payment will have come from a EEA (European economic area) country.

The location of the merchant and the currency don’t need to match. Merchants do a lot of weird and wonderful things.

Thanks @TheoGibson. I did wonder for a moment or two if I’d been frauded :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Looking at the activity in this thread of late, I have always wondered if it is actually more trouble than it’s worth to have your transactions beautified? I would rather the raw data comes through and is shown as is, even if it looks a bit rough. I can bet it can cause a lot of incoming calls/chats/disputes etc because people (and I mean the ones that don’t read this board - ‘joe public’ for want of a better term) panic when they see the strange transactions without drilling down further into the details.

It’s definitely more trouble than it’s worth

From my understanding you’ll still have the same issues either way.

Monzo just need a better system. Locking merchant changes would be one immediate improvement as changes to one can impact others.

Yeah, Merchant data is a complete mess nowadays. I’ve seen correct ones update to being incorrect, long delays before corrections are made, inconsistancies between logos (not just connected accounts vs Monzo, but Monzo vs Monzo), and lack of “rules” being added for certain merchants that use dynamic transaction info (such as Too Good To Go).

This also links in to the cashback which doesn’t trigger in some scenarios, which can be caused by merchant data being incorrect or just slightly off.

If Monzo want to keep these beautified, they need to keep on top of it, or outsource it.

And completely the wrong merchant should be prioritised over the minute changes.

I think that’s true, but also a problem. You either offer this as part of your paid packages, which they do I think for connected accounts? and get it really right or just stop doing it really. Same with Merchant logos.

I think Monzo have caused a problem for themselves they can’t really fix now, it’s been a feature for so long it’d be nearly hard to turn it off - but sunk cost fallacy and all of that - probably need to really.

Or, just do what Lloyds do and have no way to correct it if it’s wrong. Just pull the band-aid off and make everyones lives easier by not letting you change or correct it. It is what it is, even if it’s totally wrong.

You can’t scalp money off people for that though, which again is the achillies heel monzo find themselves with.

How much of it is wrong? I know 1% of millions and millions is still an awful lot, but of that 1%, the vast majority don’t care that you’re not using the rebranded colours for Morrisons.

The bigger issue is when it guesses/someone corrects wrongly, like Apple to Aldi.

Exactly, which is why personally, I think Monzo just need to stop people suggesting alternatives which then cause more problems.

People suggesting corrections isn’t the issue. It’s not like they are automatically accepted.
A human will have reviewed it and made the change, so it’s likely a Monzo employee that accepted the Apple to Aldi change incorrectly.
At the end of the day, we don’t know the exact things that are checked to ensure the suggestions (which is what they are) are correct.

In my opinion, it is too late for Monzo to stop having enriched data now, so they should continue to support suggestions for corrections. But they need whoever it is to be more vigilant, but also not take 4 weeks to make the changes.

I must be in the minority because I can’t remember the last time a merchants details were wrong.

The “card” in the Monzo app looks nice. The card itself looks rubbish.

Plus card expires in May though and as I’ve downgraded to Extra I’ll be back to coral.

There’s a vending machine in my local PureGym that comes up from Leeds, Italy

I keep submitting it through to Monzo but gave up after a few months of it not being fixed, assume it’s just how the machine is set up?

I wouldn’t bother with this one. It says PureGym so you can’t be confused.

I’m still getting merchants updated. Albeit slower than before. I support merchant enrichment staying and improve how it’s achieved. My feed looks so pretty :star_struck:

I think my silliest one was when I bought a Twix from the vending machine at Warner Bros Discovery’s offices in London, which came up as Discovery+ and suggested I made it a repeating payment.
