IP Cams (home security)

We have a Swann HD CCTV System with 4 cameras, Seems to do the job nicely.

I’d consider IP cameras for the next upgrade though.

After a quick google… not that decent

Don’t forget, if you have external facing cameras and they capture anything outside your property boundaries (so unless you’ve got a longish front garden with a gate at an angle so the camera can’t see out and big high back fences so the cameras can’t see into your neighbours), you’ll probably have to register under the Data Protection Act ( https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/domestic-cctv-using-cctv-systems-on-your-property/domestic-cctv-using-cctv-systems-on-your-property ). It’ll be £40 a year to ‘be legal’.

I bet 99% of home CCTV users don’t do that

Quite probably, plus I’m in Scotland, so no doubt we’ve got something similar or very different…

Data Protection isn’t a devolved power (yet) so same laws apply.

Interesting. On that linked article above it states “England and Wales”

Hmm interesting. I’m not sure then. I thought it came under data protection but I see it’s under protection of freedoms

EDIT - I wonder if it stills under DP in Scotland -

Yeah, it’s quite interesting…

More interestingly… I’ve got 2 dash cams in my car, which also double as parking cams…

Which records EVERYTHING… and I mean EVERYTHING

Ah yeah, I remember that case… think that’s quite extreme version of it. I’m talking a couple of camera’s here and there to keep an eye on my (hopefully) future drive way/back garden

Nooooo. This is the same Chinese stuff under a different brand. Do not connect this to the internet.

FYI the Mirai botnet from some time ago was using these to actually generate its attack traffic.

I’ve changed the default username and password if that helps

There is a hardcoded username/password on those (which the “installer” will happily use to charge you a fee if you ever forget your own password).

:joy: You know there’s a reason why Governments are banning the use of Huawei stuff right

Everywhere that I’ve worked has been robbed, they generally just rip the alarm off the wall to shut it up. Some places you’d arrive at work, doors are smashed in, police are there and the alarm is just floating about in a bucket of water.

Is that on your cv?
