Introducing the new Monzo Plus

Reading between the lines this seems like a “We don’t know/can’t say yet” in relation to the question in there?

If I could pay for an annual sub and get it down to say £3-£4 a month in fees on average I’d probably be happy to try and earn back the £1.66 but I’m a bit on the fence as things stand. I still have TSB at 1.5pc but I do want to drop using it and consolidate everything.

I really wanted to like this, but sadly I just don’t.

I’m prepared to trial it (as I’m about to go on holiday and the free cash withdrawal will be helpful) but I don’t think this is account is for me, and I’d be surprised if it is for many people… but Monzo thinks “that’s ok” so we’ll have to wait and see… I hope I am proved wrong

Here’s my thoughts, in case you care, on whats included… TLDR, I don’t think it’s worth £5 per month. I would like to know what this account was ‘supposed to be’ prior to Covid19. Perhaps that would’ve been better value. I hope Monzo haven’t fallen into the same traps as the previous Plus attempts and have released the account before it is actually ready.

  • 1.00% AER/Gross (variable) interest on up to £2,000
I have only slept 2 hours, so correct me if I’m wrong but if I have £2,000 in my account from day 1, the total yearly interest I would receive is £20? But I have spent £60 to access the account. Unfortunately interest rates are terrible at the moment so can’t expect a lot more, but it is disappointing.

  • View your other bank accounts in Monzo
This is a helpful convenience if you have a lot of accounts and credit cards, but unfortunately I don’t.

  • Virtual cards
I’ve never considered these until they were proposed months ago, I’m interested to see how often I use these but am not convinced they are essential.

  • Your credit score in Monzo
I already get Experian and Trans Union credit scores for free from multiple other services, so not sure what benefit I’ll see here

  • An exclusive holographic card
Nice little status symbol in your wallet I guess - but what happened to the metal cards?

  • Offers
I plan to buy some plants from Patch so this is quite nice. I may save £5 on this order, but I don’t think I’ll be killing plants fast enough for this to be really valuable. Unfortunately the other partners here don’t interest me, but might interest others

  • Custom categories
This is an incredibly simple software tag and should not be restricted to a paid/premium account

  • Transaction splitting
I thought this was already part of the Free Monzo account - so has this been removed from the free account now? Or is this talking about splitting a transaction into multiple custom categories. If related to custom categories, again this should not be restricted to a paid/premium account

  • Advanced roundups
Nice software feature, but minimal impact and again I don’t think should be restricted to a paid/premium account

  • 1 free cash deposit a month
Helpful if you pay cash in regularly, but I don’t and the way the world is right now with Covid19, it feels like cash will be even less prevalent

  • £400 fee-free ATM withdrawals overseas
This is good when you’re about to go on holiday (like me) but I don’t travel frequently enough to require £400 withdrawals every single month.

Nice to see interest included with opt out if someone doesn’t want interest but who wouldn’t jump at chance to earn interest I know some religions forbid interest earning so yeah nice to have option

Glad monzo is upping its game I thought the merger of Clydesdale bank and virgin money will create a rival to the monzo app with the b app rebranded with what looks like monzo with virgin money on it oh no

This is a phising attempt right? If so, someone did their research.

I wouldn’t get £1.66 as tax man takes 20% of my interest now

New question about the Google Sheets permissions;

The sign in to Google flow works really easily - excellent - but on the Permissions bit - it does say “Allow Monzo to see, view, edit, delete your Sheets” - or something similar.

But suggesting they have the ability to see everything in my Google Sheets - not just a Sheet that Monzo creates.

What’s protecting my other sheets in this instance, if I can ask that?

I got the same email. It won’t let me sign up though

I love the little icon showing it’s a virtual card payment on the transaction. This is neat!

Looks like a legit email, I got the same one (after I signed up, come on Tom…) /s just in case

It’s from “monzoemail” which is a legit domain.

If I sign Upto Plus, does the new card come out automatically or do I have to then order it as a replacement or can I put that off until my current expires?

The new Monzo plus is great really happy with how it’s turned out!

One thing that would be really nice to have though, is the option to reorder aggregated accounts from other banks. Currently they sit at the end of the list in the other they were linked. So even within the same bank you can’t reorder two accounts right now.

Exactly the reason I’m signing up.

Do I hope more features come, yes.
Am I happy to put £5 a month to a bank I like using and want to get better, Yes.

The features are cool, without the interest it’s probably not worth a fiver.

Unfortunately not, payments will go out on the same day each month.

Cheers. Its the @monzoemail that threw me.

You can chose to skip the ordering of your new Plus card.

Does IFTTT still work with transactions from virtual cards? Am guessing they could do as they are card purchases coming off the main account, but could someone confirm maybe?

The Bug is in the signup flow, the app is pretty stable

Completely agree Toby! Revolut are waaaaay ahead of Monzo in what they offer.
I wouldn’t be as disappointed if they had mobile and travel insurance.
