Interesting article about Apple Pay

Certain places accept apple/android payments above £30 as you’re verifying the payment. Used it a couple of times myself.

Well, if CDCVM is supported on the terminal/processing, that limit is raised considerably to theoretically the same ranges as a regular chip and pin EMV card. You’d hit retailer floor limits and your balance before hitting the maximum Apple Pay payment amount!

That’s a game changer! Is it obvious it’s supported for higher limits?

Think it’s a case of try it and see. A lot of places support it now. The theatre I work for has just enabled contactless on our card machines and I was surprised that they support going above £30 without it even being requested.

A table that lists contactless compatibility (has not been updated in a long long time) - pretty much matches up with the list of retailers on the Apple Pay and Android Pay websites.

Once Monzo current accounts come with Apple Pay I will have to try it out.

Your biggest hint will be the terminal still displaying contactless symbols when the amount is above £30, otherwise, just try it.

Unfortunately, it seems many staff at retail aren’t told about this so do be prepared with a card in hand and an apology/explanation if you’re trying it for the first time at a merchant.

I know from pre-Monzo experience that Nando’s, Five Guys, and Go Outdoors support it, as do any small merchants with an iZettle terminal.

Sweet, thanks for the heads up! I’ll only try it when there isn’t a huge queue waiting behind then!!

I’m only gonna try it with a huge queue waiting behind me :eyes:

My understanding is that, in the UK at least, Apple Pay should work wherever contactless works. The limits are a little less clear. For example, in an Apple Store, I’ve previously been able to spend several hundred pounds in a single transaction. In most stores, the limit is £30, and online, I know that it depends from bank to bank - for example, Lloyds Bank allows Monzo top-ups of up to £100 - though I was once able to top up as much as £300. Banks do (and should) adjust their limits according to the current threats - to minimise the exposure to fraud of both their customers and themselves.

I largely stopped using Apple Pay for contactless transactions because Monzo gave me the similar benefit of real-time transaction notifications that I was getting through using Apple Pay with my other accounts. If Monzo were to introduce Apple Pay, I’m sure I’d very quickly become a regular user.
