Interesting article about Apple Pay

Very interesting video (though admittedly on a bit of a tangent!). I hadn’t considered that at all - though have until now used Oyster since I believe it works out less expensive if you buy an annual travel card. However, when next up for renewal, I may instead try contactless for a month just to compare

You would in most cases be correct - the weekly capping system currently matches the 7 day travel card rates but is beaten by monthly and annual travel cards. Great for those who are not expecting to work for extended periods of time in London; business trips for a week for example, would be ideal.

I remember when Apple Pay first came to the UK, I used it for the first week then forgot all about it. It must have been before I was a Monzo (Mondo, back then) user. I’m still unsure if I will get back into using Apple Pay when Monzo support it with their current accounts.

As has been said above though, it’s great for when you forget your cards but have your phone, so there is that.

I’d be all over Apple Pay but knowing my luck I’ll be somewhere that doesn’t take it so I’d be carrying my card and then just use that and I know on the next one I’d just take out the card again.

Am I right in thinking though that Apple Pay works on most NFC terminals now or does it actually have to be Apple Pay enabled?

As far as I am aware it works on all NFC terminals.

my understanding was any NFC terminal may take ApplePay or AndroidPay up to the £30 contactless limit but they will only accept ApplePay or AndroidPay above £30 when the retailer has opted to do so.

I’m pretty sure that is correct.

Another reason I don’t use Apple Pay that often is that my local area doesn’t allow me to. We have the older model of contactless terminals that accept contactless cards but not mobile payments. So if I don’t go to the supermarkets I physically can’t use Apple Pay.

I live in a semi rural area so we should have these systems but the shops just haven’t implemented them.

I was exactly like that with android pay. The novelty wore off. This was compounded by the fact that most shops around here didn’t take contactless so I’d have to have the card ready to use anyway just in case… then there were the ones that wouldn’t enable the reader unless you were holding a card (phones just confused them)…

It’s changed a bit. More places take contactless and they’re probably a bit more used to phone payments, but now I have Monzo.

I think one of the major problems for this in the UK at least is down to the fact that we can only use Apple Pay with transaction £30 or less so AP really only gets used every so often, like when you’re buying a loaf of milk. (Thanks brain)

I’m hoping the people behind theses limits increase it soon preferably to somewhere between £50 - £100 so that it can become more practical.

Edit: A loaf of bread or milk… :joy::joy:

It’d be ideal if contactless stayed at £30-50 but Apple/Android Pay was put up to £150-200. That would be the ideal solotion, in my eyes.

As far as i’m aware it works on all NFC readers. I have several shops that say they support contactless but not AP yet AP works fine, i’ve yet to have an issue with it…
