Google Pixel 6

Aside from a dubious fingerprint scanner, I am a real fan of my Pixel 5

This new Pixel 6 definitely feels like they are stretching themselves rather more, but I really cannot get with that camera bump on the back

Good to see that the ever enjoyable and dependable Dieter Bohn has had his hands on it and reckons it is a good effort

Dieter Bohn is awesome. Him, MKBHD, MrMobile and Jud (UrAvgConsumer) are my favourite tech YouTubers for sure.

Btw, for the fellow stock Android fans, what’s your journey been?

Mine:

T-Mobile G1 (since Day 1, even prior to Android 1.0 as I recall!)
T-Mobile G2 (imported from the US, the version sold here was the Desire Z and didn’t have stock Android)
Samsung Galaxy S2 (moved away from stock as the raw power was so much better than everything else available at the time)
Nexus 4
Nexus 5
Moto G (briefly while my N5 was getting repaired)
Nexus 6 (loved this giant beast of a phone)
Nexus 6P
Pixel 2 XL
Pixel 4 XL

Owned a bunch of other phones for brief periods, like the Sony Xperia S, LG something (for a few weeks in between Nexus models), and the Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite (bought while my P4XL was getting replaced earlier this year and still have it). Also owned both gen Nexus 7 tablets, the Nexus Player, both gen Pixel Buds, a couple of Chromebooks and prob some other stuff I’ve forgotten about!

Another 6P when first one had reboot issue
Full refund for 6P when second one started rebooting, so Pixel 2XL
Pixel 5

Waiting to see the official pricing before deciding to go with Pixel 6XL and pass down my beloved Pixel 5 or not!

I’ve done fairly well in upgrading every few years. I def had one between the Panasonic and HTC Hero but my brain has melted. I’ve had another LG (L40 was for taking to festivals) and possibly another HTC but obviously not memorable. Nokia and Sony

Motorola c520 (1998)

Panasonic GD67 (2002)

 ?

HTC Hero (2009)

LG L40 (2014) - Temp phone

Motorola Nexus 6 (2014)

Motorola Moto G6 Plus (2018)

Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite 5G (2021)

Best I can remember personally:

  • HTC Desire HD

(x2 as Orange insisted on replacing it even though it was the SIM that had issues!)

My first smartphone. Not stock Android, but then that was before Nexus got off the ground properly

Rocker button kept falling off after a year so I used it with a bit of duct tape over it for the next year!

  • LG Nexus 5

Telephone quality was terrible when not using wired headphones, but pressing on the back improved matters somewhat. Known design flaw!

Power button stopped working in the end, requiring me to move on

For a while I needed to temporarily plug in a power source to get the screen to come on, which was annoying as it broke while I was on the plane to Spain!

Loved this phone though!

  • Moto G4

Basically stock Android. Motorola/Lenovo are very minimal, which I appreciated

The screen comes on when you pick it up, which was a welcome addition after my Nexus 5 issues

The charging port stopped working in the end, requiring me to move on

Great phone for the money

  • Moto G6 Plus

Again basically stock Android. Motorola/Lenovo are very minimal, which I appreciated

The charging port was USB-C, which was a welcome addition after my Moto G4 issues

Nothing wrong with it, but

Also another great phone for the money

Recommended the Moto G series to my friend recently off the back of my two and he was very happy with the cost and quality!

  • Pixel 5

Excellent camera. Easily the best I personally have ever had by an absolute mile

Feels a bit small sometimes

Fingerprint scanner fails more than it works

I like when people apologise for going with Apple.

I totally forgot that I had an iPhone 4! (2011?)

However it was given by my work, the reason given was the boss wanted to get rid of ugly land line phones at
everyone’s desks. I suspect also for tracking and encouring being emailed outside of work…

I like the size of the pixel 5 , not sure if I’ll like the size of the 6, but I’ve only have my 5 for a year, so I’ll skip the 6 I think.

So we’re looking at 13 more sleeps to go, that’s if 13th September is the actual release date, based off the rumour mill

A few ‘dumb’ phones followed by:
HTC ChaCha
Some HTC or LG that I can’t remember to save my life :joy:
Nexus 4 (and Nexus 7)
Nexus 5
Nexus 6
Nexus 6P
Pixel XL
Pixel 2XL
Pixel 3XL

(Pixel 6 Pro :crossed_fingers:)

Sep 13th was the rumoured launch date I think, so not the release date.

The latest rumour is Oct 19th pre-order and Oct 28th release date.

Folding phones just look bulky to me, maybe I need to go down to a phone shop to actually look at them. It’s hard to really tell just looking at photos online.

Leaked today $599 and $898 Pro in the US

On the exchange rate that’s £436 and £654.

But in reality I expect them to switch the $ for £ and it be the same. £599 and £898

That leaked pricing is way less than I was expecting. At that price (even at £599), the P6 looks like a very good deal.

599 is decent.

I guess the idea of trying to use apple pricing models wasn’t working out well for them :stuck_out_tongue:

The question for me is it worth the upgrade over the 5.

US pricing is always before tax, so you can’t just do a conversion to £.

Most companies do though… £1=$1.
