Be interesting to see what they say, and how I, Joe User, can check that…

I don’t know why you thought “publishing documents” meant they’d be… not published to the public
Ehhh I didn’t.
You implied future tense in your reply… “they’d be publishing” not ‘they have published’ or I’d have gone and found it myself.
Thanks though.
The camera is no different to having a Nest Cam in your house. It’s a useful security feature but if you don’t like it you can turn it off.
This is a lot more than I’d expect from a security camera though?! I have a Logitech one in house to keep an eye on our dogs, one of which is epileptic but pretty sure it’s not using any AI stuff to figure out that I’ve walked into the room, and not my partner (and by AI stuff I mean, recognising that one of us is 6’1 tall, the other … is smaller… )
I don’t think the Nest Hub is marketed as a security camera is it?
I’d agree with you if it was on a genuine security camera (like the Nest Cam) - But this is designed (I think) to be much more interactive/assistanty…
Google have said you can use it as a Nest security camera if you want, so I guess it’s being marketed as both a security device and a smart assistant.
I’d love one. Love the facial recognition feature and gesture control.
Think i might start with the smaller version though for my bedside table.
It watches for motion, and also people it doesn’t recognise.
As mentioned though, the facial recognition is mostly around showing only that person’s information when they use the device
Yeah got that, ta.
Why do I want this … Sensible me is holding off from making an impulse buy
It absolutely is.
Apple hitching their wagon to “privacy” as a marketing angle is the reason Siri is garbage compared to Google Assistant.
I’ve been travelling around the US for the last few weeks and have been in 4 cities. When one of our flights was delayed, Google Assistant told us before the airport did. It had our travel itinerary all lined up even though all of our flights were with different airlines. It put check-in reminders in my notifications and told me when the boarding time was without asking.
Siri and Alexa are still stuck in the “ask me something and I’ll try and find the answer” paradigm. Google Assistant is playing in a whole other league by surfacing the information when you need it, in the right place, so you don’t even have to ask.
I can Chromecast Netflix to my existing Home Hub, so I guess this should be supported? I guess I could use one as a bedroom TV perhaps.
Huh, last I heard that didn’t work, good to know!
Hmm, it’s always appeared to be an option but perhaps I’ve never actually tried it!
Out of interest, what don’t you specifically trust about Google?
I’m very aware that they suck up every bit of my data that they can. But I also have faith that they know that its in their critical interest that that data remain private and secure, unlike Facebook who seem(ed) happy to share their data with anyone at all.
The reason why Google provides me with so much utility is that they know so much about me. For me, this is where I think Apple falls short. I also trust them to keep my data private and secure, but they seem to have this dogma about “privacy” which completely stops them from doing things which would benefit their users massively.
I’ve bought every home device so far, so can’t see myself stopping now!
I’ll probably pick one up for my kitchen/livingroom.
Google’s business model is built around data, so whilst I trust them somewhat to keep my data private and secure from OTHER sources, I’m not clear on what Google use my data for exactly, and equally where do services that are linked with Google stop? Do Google share with ‘trusted’ services I don’t know about? They have in the past.
Firstly, I’m not a massive “privacy” concerned citizen…(sounds bad when you say it out loud ) - Like a few others here, the convenience of using these smart devices outweighs any concerns I have with privacy (in general).
I think the thing with Google, is they’ve been embroiled in a few privacy issues in the past, they profit off “data”, and the whole “no smoke without fire” phrase comes to mind.
Although I should add… If I was in the Google Eco System, I absolutely wouldn’t have an issue using these devices - They are light years ahead of where Apple are IMO (and I’m a huge Apple fan/user).
What’s the 3a like?
