So I have previously transferred money internationally to a friend’s Austrian account from my Monzo using transferwise. They then owed me money and transferred it to the transferwise IBAN that they received my money from before. I don’t know how to access this money, I have never set up a transferwise account but used it as a third party through the Monzo app. The IBAN they sent it to is Belgian. Anyone got any ideas? Will the money be bounced back to them maybe?
Do you have an email or other communication from TransferWise, now known as Wise?
Are you sure this isn’t a scam of any sort, asking you to send them money before they can release the payment?
Other than the possibility of a scam, your friend should not have sent anything without asking you for your bank details first.
Monzo use Wise as an intermediary, so the Wise bank details don’t belong to you. Ideally it should bounce back to your friend as the name won’t match the account, however I don’t know if Monzo have any clever tricks up their sleeve and can match the transfer to you.
Support would be able to help much more than we can though.
I don’t think Monzo will be able to help much at all. One of TFWs Europe accounts will have received a random transfer from your friend, and will have no idea what to do with it so ideally it will bounce back to them. Although that might not be the case
You need to get in touch with Wise and explain the situation, they will probably give you contact details to pass to your friend

I don’t think that’s (sorry so so sorry) wise.
I think their friend needs to get in touch with Wise and say they’ve sent money and it hasn’t been received. Wise won’t talk to the OP as the OP has no relationship with them and there’s no point in them talking to Monzo as Monzo won’t have it.
