Feedback regarding the current account onboarding process

I thought the onboarding process was flawless and pretty intuitive :hushed:

Received email invite
Downloaded the app
Populated details within the app and sent the 2 verification steps
Told within the app my card is on it’s way
Received card and activated it, thought the auto read of the sms confirmation was a nice touch :+1:
Transferred money from my old account to monzo via bank transfer using sort code / account number easily found within the app.

I don’t like when bank apps or any other apps are trying to ā€œgive me a tourā€. I mean, is your app that complicated that I actually need a tour on how to use it? If so, we have a problem here then!

I totally see what you mean, but… well made, short and skippable tour can really help new users. Just to show them around, just a little bit! Once you get a card, app is really empty, when I got Monzo it remained empty for a week and it was really sad experience.

Companies make some mistakes, too detailed tours and you don’t remember anything anyway, tour - as you said - explaining UX because UX is rubbish. Other companies like Lastpass show me bloody tour each time I install it, while they should know that I had already viewed it.

If there’s a good company to design a nice tour/onboarding, that’d be Monzo. I’d be just interested how it performs and what’s general feedback on the back of it.

I think Monzo get a good balance between doing a tour and introducing new features.

@Sam has some feelings about the ā€˜empty’ appearance of the app when you first install it! For some people the intro/walkthrough is a nice way to demo how Monzo will look and work once it has been fleshed out with your spending data!

@Avishai I 100% agree, the empty state of the App on first load makes me sad too!

We have designs in place to fix this beyond the ā€˜preview’ version of the current account but we are also pushing a quick fix live very soon. This will be a simple onboarding item that welcomes you to the Monzo current account, displaying your new Monzo customer number and sort code. This should hopefully make things feel a little warmer on first load!

thanks for sharing your feelings!

ā€œthe empty state of the App on first load makes me sad too!ā€

Simple solution: stick some money in and get spending!

Would be nice if Monzo could give some free money to get started.

Wow, a bonus preview, and an Android one, thanks a lot! I like it, but here’s more feedback:

  • I think that empty white space on homepage could use some Hot Chip graphic maybe? Once there are enough transactions to fill the screen, Chip could disappear. Extra bonus would if there were 3-4 different Chip versions, so it’s not so boring. It might be better to have Chip in lighter colour, or just a grey scale silhouette.
  • Will topping up by bank transfer actually be the easiest way? Card top-ups will remain, so bank transfer overall might be slower than card top-up. Taking user out of the app to make transfer from legacy account, probably requiring calculator thingie to approve new payee… Seems like a lot more hassle than card topup.

I’m gonna start oversharing my sadness a lot more now. I think I’m sad because I haven’t seen Android Targets yet, ekhem!.. :joy:

The android app does this already, albeit with very slightly different copy? Am I missing something?

I imagine that since card top-ups continue to cost Monzo :pound:, they want to steer users into using bank transfers, and getting in the habit of using that instead. Also it makes it feel like a ā€˜proper’ bank account and separates it from the prepaid card. I’m not disagreeing with you, I think a card top-up here would be easier and quicker, so maybe the text needs to be changed to ā€œThe preferred way to add moneyā€¦ā€?

True, true, I see what you mean too. I order A/B test! Unless it was already done, and we’re just throwing scenarios for no good reason!

Two pieces of feedback on the process.

  1. When doing the verification the activity spinner was showing for 5 minutes. I guess it was the video upload taking a while but I actually thought it had hanged. Maybe a % progress bar

  2. I have to wait for my debit card to arrive to do anything. I’d have thought my account would be set up so I could at least transfer direct debits - could it not show your current account details when verified but still waiting for the debit card to come. I think Starling do this or maybe Revolut - a debit card is optional

Otherwise very slick and Monzo like!

Just finished the verification for the current account and am now waiting on my card to be delivered.

The experience seemed very quick and I was verified within 2 minutes or so. I would however agree with @anon18592995 where the activity spinner just seems to hang but it is actually doing something in the background.

I also agree with the point about being able to setup direct debits before the card gets delivered, eventually it would be good while waiting for delivery to be able to add the card to apple/android pay before the card is physically delivered

Could you use the NFC chip on your phone (if available) and just tap your card against your phone?

The NFC APIs on iOS are extremely limited and only allow reading specifically formatted NFC ā€œtagsā€. I guess since Monzo makes their own cards they could potentially make the chip pretend to be a ā€œtagā€ but that seems like a ton of effort for little benefit.

I would agree with others, about being given access to the account number and sort code before the card is delivered so that DD’s and the like can be setup and funds transferred.

Looking forward to giving the CA a whirl

I agree with all you’ve said. That’s one of the most seamless sign up for something I’ve ever done.

  • auto sms read was particularly good

Setting up first transfer into CA and had to scribble down on paper the sort code and account number which after all the in your hand tech is a bit of a bump. Most bank cards have your sort code and account number on which is much easier for when you need to do this par for thing.

You can select the account number and sort code in the app and just copy & paste from there? (I’m on iOS if that makes a difference?)
