Allow customers to choose their employer or salary source within the app (for example, “ABC Logistics Ltd”).
When a payment arrives from that selected source, Monzo should automatically recognise it as salary and trigger Salary Sorter without asking for confirmation.
Benefits:
More reliable salary detection.
No need to manually confirm salary payments.
Works perfectly for weekly, fortnightly and monthly pay.
Makes Salary Sorter completely automatic.
2. Spend From Any Pot Using Your Physical Card
Virtual cards are a fantastic feature, but it would be great to allow the physical Monzo card to be linked to any pot.
For example:
Open the “Work Allowance” pot.
Tap Use Physical Card for This Pot.
All purchases made with the physical card are taken from that pot until the customer changes it back.
This removes the need to create a separate virtual card for every spending category while making budgeting much more flexible.
3. Merchant & Category Spending Rules
Take the previous idea one step further by allowing customers to create spending rules.
For example:
Merchant Rules
Tesco → Groceries Pot
Shell → Fuel Pot
Amazon → Shopping Pot
Costa → Coffee Pot
Category Rules
Restaurants → Eating Out Pot
Fuel Stations → Fuel Pot
Supermarkets → Groceries Pot
Public Transport → Travel Pot
These rules could automatically direct payments from the selected pot, making budgeting almost effortless.
4. Increase Pot & Virtual Card Limits
The current limits of:
20 Pots
5 Virtual Cards
can become restrictive for customers who budget every aspect of their finances.
It would be great to either:
Increase the limits significantly (for example, 50 Pots and 20 Virtual Cards), or
Offer unlimited Pots and a much higher Virtual Card allowance as part of Monzo Extra, Perks or Max.
Many people separate money for:
Bills
Fuel
Food
Christmas
Holidays
Birthdays
Vehicle maintenance
Medical expenses
Emergency savings
Children’s savings
Personal spending
Home improvements
Pets
Work expenses
Long-term savings
The current limits can mean combining budgets that would otherwise be easier to manage separately.
5. Smart Budgeting Rules
A simple automation system would be an excellent addition.
Examples could include:
When salary arrives, automatically split it into Pots.
When the Fuel Pot drops below £30, move £30 from the main balance.
When the Christmas Pot reaches its target, pause weekly transfers.
When a bill is due tomorrow and the Pot is short, notify the customer.
If spending exceeds a monthly budget, send an alert.
A really well articulated post and they are all features that would be massively useful and improve Monzo’s offering.
Sadly I don’t think they’ll happen. Monzo seem determined to upsell everything under the sun instead and clutter the app with gimmicks. Had a pop up yesterday telling me to “Learn to budget like a boss”. Thanks but I’m not 18. I think I’m getting old!!
Number 1 is a nice idea and I know Revolut does it however you’d need to put in rules and guardrails to avoid issues like expense claims, bonuses etc. triggering it incorrectly.
Like most of the other replies I also think Monzo aren’t that interested in iterating and improving on existing features too much and instead seem to focus more on new features. Just look at how long people have been asking for Trends to have different pay periods.
Revolut’s implementation of salary sorter is pretty good, they’re on the second iteration of it now which also lets you forward to other (internal) accounts, buy equities and sweep any remainder to a different account like savings. You can configure it by % or fixed funds value, and set it to Auto or Manual confirmation on receipt if you wish. It identifies the source by sender and + / - 20% deviation which probably should distinguish between expenses in most cases. Appreciate it’s probably more a power user thing, works pretty well for me though
Edit: Looks like you can also auto-sort more than one inbound payment source now too, and across different currencies
