Electric Scooters (Bird, Lime, etc)

Yes, category AM, it needs to have tax (currently free), mot and insurance too.

For people who can already drive, it means completing a one time CBT course.

That will put a lot of people off, I imagine.

Scooters are already not allowed on cycle tracks, apart from the few places there are trial rental schemes coming.

You need to keep doing your CBT test every 2 years until you get your full moped or bike licence.

If you don’t have a car license already, then yes it would need to be renewed after 2 years, or you’d need to obtain a motorcycle (AM or above) or a car license. For anyone with with a car license issued after 2001, mopeds can be driven for the life of that car license, once a CBT is taken, without the need to be renewed, 50cc petrol equivalent or less.

The biggest issue I see at the moment is the lack of insurance providers for this type of vehicle.

Exactly, and because its top speed is greater than 15.5mph, it’s unlikely to be allowed on cycle tracks, if the government ever decides to allow the scooters in the trial to be owned privately (and be legally ridable in public spaces without indivual vehicle approval through the DVSA).

Finally, well it’s in the pipeline.

I now have a mix of a folding bike and an escooter and both have their uses, however I still think they will be ruined by the idiots and people like me who have indicators, reflective clothing and helmet lights and a max speed of 15.5 will be in the minority. I do think the article is a bit overblown on the parking issue, people are not going to leave it unlocked in the middle of the street same as they don’t a bike.

I am starting to see more of the electric moped/motorbike things they seem to be the next “target” but they just seem madness to use.
