COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

I have dodgy health so it’ll hit me harder than most but it’s the more vulnerable groups I’m concerned of passing it on to

All the department has resigned themselves to the fact we are going to get it at some stage. Work for the NHS so working from home isn’t an option, unless the patients come round and we can have a cuppa

Healthcare workers and their support staff are going to be hit first and hardest. I really feel for you :frowning:

It’s nice though that Monzo have made it clear that anyone who would prefer to work from home can do so. My husband is avoiding London for the time being.

Best way to cough - into a tissue which you throw into a bin as soon as you can.

Inside of elbow is next best way.

Hand is bad because now your hand is covered with germs which you’ll be spreading all over surfaces - and people - you touch. It’s scarcely better than uncovered, in that respect.

The gov have changed the status of coronavirus to something official meaning you may be able to claim on insurance depending on their terms and conditions

Interesting thread here with actual researched facts written by someone who knows what they’re talking about:

This Reddit AMA with a group of medical experts is pretty good for info and answers to questions.

Specifically regarding masks: https://www.reddit.com/r/Coronavirus/comments/fdf5fq/we_are_a_team_of_medical_experts_following/fjgyv5f?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

EasyJet have cancelled the flights. Naples.

Sorry to hear that :pensive:

Wish that part of the AMA had happened earlier, would’ve saved me a lot of typing here

Given the number of epidemiologists in this forum  I thought I would ask you lovely people:

My husband and I are fit, healthy and in our 30s. We live with our fit and healthy 2 year old who goes to nursery two days a week. My husband can work from home no problem but I’m self-employed and working from home is not an option. We live in a commuter town but have tickets to the theatre next week. Should we travel into the West End and go to the show? Should we attempt to resell the tickets? Wait and see?

My best uninformed guess is that you are more likely to get run over or fall down the stairs than get Coronavirus in London at the moment.

If you do get a virus, it’s more likely to be boring old cold/flu.

I mean the general advice is wash your hands regularly, don’t touch your face and continue like you would normally. Bring an alcohol hand sanitizer with you and use that frequently in combination with hand washing. Avoid touching surfaces like lift buttons, handrails etc. Obviously wash your hands first thing when you get back home.

Added bonus: theatre might be emptier so you could sneak better seats.

My work have basically said no business travel is permitted, unless business critical, and Italy / SE Asia are completely off limits until further notice.

I’m fortunate in that I can work from home if needed, so my main concern really is basic hygiene + tube travel.

No doubt the UK numbers will increase of course, but otherwise I’m going to act as normal, with maybe a bit more hand sanitiser in my life, and wait in the Winchester for all this to blow over.

:scream: No, please don’t resell the tickets. That’s absolutely not the answer to this kind of public health issue.

Personally, I’d review the situation a bit closer to the time but I’d try to attend and keep as much to “business as usual” as possible, unless official guidance changes.

You and your family sound fit and well and have no reason to panic. Government advice already errs on the side of caution - that’s why 99.5% of Covid-19 tests in this country have come back negative.

Don’t forget, locking your children in your house and spraying them with disinfectant 10 times a day will make them weird and needy people in the long run.

You probably face the same risk going to Asda. Unless you are going to avoid all public spaces for the next year or 2 then carry on

That is a decision made on quite strong commercial grounds; if they release it now they will see a hit on attendance due to restrictions in some countries and panic/worry in others.

Something that doesn’t get publicised much is that containment works… China went from seeing 2k+ cases a day (and that was after ignoring the problem for a month, so it got pretty bad) to 143 new cases yesterday & 2k+ a day recovering.

So absolutely we should be isolating people exposed, and trying to prevent transmission… not because everyone is going to get it but precisely because if we do that most people won’t.

Total number of UK cases has now risen to 115 - an increase of 30 on yesterday.
