COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

That was positive too.

Had my Christmas PCR test from Santa this morning, plenty other people queuing for the same gift

Were a fair number of staff on site, who’d all taken time out from the festivities to facilitate the tests.

Just got to sit back and wait a day or 2 now for confirmation of what I already know from the lateral flow.

Result is back as a positive, yep didn’t know this already :eyes::sweat_smile:

Suppose I best get ready for a call from them for the pills :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

@DaveJ is this the drug you’re referring to for vulnerable groups?

Doesn’t look like it’s in pill form  unless there’s another I’m not aware of? I’d be eligible for whatever it is too if I ever test positive.

It’ll be either that or Molnupiravir.

Likely to be this, can’t see them wanting me to come in for the other version which is done via a drip.

Just had a text to say expect a phone call within 24 hours to discuss treatment options.

Depends which condition you have to which treatment you get.
Either tablet form or in through a vein (IV).
It’s fairly new as well only been active for just over a week.

Had my call about further treatment, it’s not needed with the medication I’m on. Symptoms are nothing more than a cold with a bit of aching, so it’s all good.

All the very best. Hopefully it’ll be mild and you’ll be over it soon.

Despite Plan B measures England hospitalisations are going up. I do not understand why no additional measures are being introduced in England.

Likely because they aren’t shooting up enough to justify it. At some point we do need to start looking at the data in terms of what we can manage.

I’m not a scientist nor in government. I assume you’re not either. So we don’t really know as much as we would like. It’s easy to sit here and make a decision over our morning coffee either way, it’s much more difficult when you’re making that decision for real.

People don’t seem to be content either way. What I would suggest is do what you feel needs to be done. You don’t need the government to tell you to restrict yourself.

Personally I’ll be having a low key NYE. I suspect many will too. I’m still not convinced that nightclubs closing are the answer to hospitalisations and/or deaths however.

Yes, but the data is very noisy. The real concern for the NHS right now is staff shortages and the impact just a few more Covid patients may cause.

Good news, obviously still developing.

I know I’m certainly only feeling this illness as a bit of a bad cold with aching legs.

See what the data brings us in a couple of weeks once we’ve had enough time for the Christmas period to take effect.

Not having any more restrictions appears to be the safe bet at balancing between businesses and health. It also provides extra data to look at between what Scotland, Wales and Ireland did against what England decided not to bother with.

I think there’s a big political reality here. If Johnson out more restrictions forward, he’d need Labour to vote for it again, which would likely sound the death knell on his premiership. We’d also likely see Sunak and Truss openly criticising his position as they garner support for their leadership bids. And any move would need some finance from Sunak, which will be difficult to get. I believe BJ is taking the ā€˜lets risk it’ approach.

If it turns out Omicron is so mild the NHS can cope through the winter, BJ will have gained some political capital. If it all goes to s**t and the NHS is bought to near collapse, he’ll just be able to say we didn’t have the data at the time etc, either way I think it works out better for him.

While I agree, I’m not sure what restrictions you’d bring in, short of complete lockdown? Even then, supermarkets were open.

If he brings in restrictions his party will rebel/force him out. Needing Labour to get then through parliament may make him look weak in the eyes of the voyeurs.

By not bringing in restrictions, he’s gambling the NHS will hold up. If it does, his party are happy and the public is happy.

But if the NHS falls over, he’s out and we get Give or someone else, and Labour get to make huge capital from everything.

Essentially at this point Boris is a hostage to fortune and is making decisions by choosing the ones that carry less political risk for him, rather than listening to what his scientists are telling him.

I do hope you’re wrong and that with enough people shouting at him some part of the message gets through. R-

Enforcing mask, capping number of shoppers, doing one way systems to increase social distancing would be nice in supermarkets.

Too many people without masks invade personal space.

In Latvia there are two classes of supermarkets - those that require vaccination passport and those that don’t. Thus one has opportunity to shop in a more strict setting.

What classes are there? I’m not suggesting it’s a bad idea but shopping and supermarkets can vary in function wildly across the world. We have seen stores previously deemed ā€œessentialā€ or ā€œnon-essentialā€ by the goods they sell and it really wasn’t seen to be useful.

Enforcing masks would be fine if every other person wasn’t ā€œexemptā€. Though to be quite fair I’ve noticed a fairly high mask compliance on the tube and in supermarkets near me in London, so I don’t think you’d see a marked increase there.

Capping numbers would require someone to have a number that would be useful - is it done by square footage? By size of groups? It’s all well and good having 100 people in a store but useless if they are all going to the same parts of the store anyway.

All of the things you’ve suggested now don’t really require further restrictions - masks and social distancing are currently the rules/guidelines. What you want is enforcement, but companies have already said they won’t enforce them.

Problem they have in Supermarkets at the moment is that they are not allowed to challenge anyone not wearing a mask (At least the one my Mrs works in) and on the odd time she has reminded customers about face masks most shout back they are exempt and they can’t also ask to see any proof of this. So what can you do as Supermarkets are an absolute free for all at present.
