Hi @kavi and thanks for outlining the process for everyone.
Interesting that this doesn’t seem to be working for some people?
That’s what I have done on iOS and it worked fine, but I think other people may be doing something different, so thanks for explaining it better than I managed!
However, previously when CoP was first introduced before the payee editing feature was available, I did experience being asked multiple times. I don’t know if this now works or not as I have manually set up all my payees using the new edit feature to already have the option set.
I think the ability to edit the payees is great, but it also seems to result in a different experience depending on whether you go through the payment flows organically, as you are paying someone, or edit manually in advance. Perhaps this can be looked into further by the payments team, as there also may be a platform element which results in different behaviour depending whether you are using Android or iOS?
Once you have definitely set the account type (via the edit bank details screen), at what point is it “lost”?
When you’re going through the payment flow – i.e. you’re forced to make a selection? This suggests the saved type is not being restored correctly during the payment flow.
When you go to the edit bank details screen – i.e. none of the radio buttons are selected? This would suggest that we’re not saving or restoring the type properly (or it’s being wiped out by something else).
Both?
I still can’t seem to replicate the problem but will keep an eye on it
I’m getting it when, instead of going via the payments tab, I use the “send money to” option from an entry in the transaction feed.
From there, the all app consistently loses the “account type” setting and I have to select it to be able to proceed. When I check in the Payments tab, it’s still set correctly there - and starting the flow from there works as expected.
A potential feature request: could we also set a default category to a payee? Transfers to my savings account are only ever gonna be “Finance” so it’d be nice to be able to set a default (with maybe the prompt staying if no default is set).
Aha this is also where I faltered, had to go back to the edit payee section and default it there to personal as none was selected. Perhaps because my payees are from before CoP was introduced I never did this?
Interesting point though @kavi , accounts dont change from personal to business so id think it would be better that if someone has an existing payee that doesnt have a default classification (personal or business) and a user selects one in the payments flow this should be used to update the saved payee details to reflect the default account type.
If experienced monzo users were baffled by this I can see this causing alot of frustration for less experienced users who probably are currently selecting it each time and suffering in silence
Tangentially related: I get confused about whether to select personal or business for things like credit card payments. The account number and sort code are corporate buckets, which suggests that it should be business that’s selected. But the receiving bank says to pay your own name, which suggests personal.
Similarly, transferring money to Freetrade (for example) presumably involves transferring money into their business account - which they then process into your own account but means of the reference code. So personal or business?
To me it looks to be related to Scheduled payments @kavi
I think because i have daily payments to these accounts that were perhaps set up before I selected a default account type it keeps wiping it?
I have since set the default by editing the payee like you suggested earlier in the thread but it is still overwriting it to be removed daily and this is the only reasonable link i can think of how/why its doing it.
okay so i was wrong on the account type not being saved when you go through the payment flow. it definitely should be updating if you change the account type during the payment flow (it wasn’t for me while i was testing because of some internal config).
Super disappointed this to be honest as I still have duplicate contexts in my list with no way to merge them on iOS because there is still no way to add another bank account to a Monzo contact or merge that Monzo contact with their other bank account so I have two of the same people that are in my list, which occurs for me six times in my phone.
For example names changed obviously:
In my contacts I have
John Doe, and he has a Monzo account
I have also paid him to his starling account and that is listed separately but there is no way to merge the two or edit and add his starling to the Monzo one (which can’t be removed)
In contrast I have a friend in my phone where I paid him to his Santander account in my phone before he joined Monzo and his contact card lists both accounts… Monzo as default. Why is this not consistent and why can’t you add the Monzo only contacts and add their second accounts?
Also does anyone else feel that “Joint Account” should be another account type alongside business and personal?
You can add Monzo accounts to the same contact, but this relies on you using their sort code and account number (which was the clunky approach that Payments with Friends was supposed to obviate the need for in the first place). I believe you still would get a second duplicate entry generated by payments with friends, even if you did this, so it’s not a solution!
I agree with you that some option to link these two payees is badly needed.
I just tried it iOS to iOS and it came up. I had to allow Bluetooth. We are contacts as well but that shouldn’t make a difference. I didn’t actually do a payment, but could have done!
