Cashback (at tills!)

I’ve really tried searching the forum for this but I’m getting a different sort of ‘cash back’ results!

Someone has just told me their normal account (ie no upgrades) fails when they try to get cash back at tills in a supermarket. One supermarket saw the striking Monzo card and said “sorry that doesn’t work for cash back” and they tried, but it failed

Is this true? Are there known issues? I can’t see what the issue would be. I rarely get Cashback but have done so previously on my Nationwide account.

Any views?

Debit cards can offer cashback at the till, credit cards cannot.

It depends if the merchant has the option setup as far as I’m aware.

I believe this was at ‘Co Op’. They definitely do Cashback, but alas not Monzo.

Is it bank specific? I would’ve thought if it’s on its on?

No idea, maybe the bank has to implement it. I don’t know too much about it, never needed it.

CoOp are a Visa bank so maybe it doesn’t work with MasterCard. Yes, I know, the shops are different from the bank but I’d have thought that they use the CoOp as their bank. This certainly happens at CoOp brand ATMs which are Visa/Link only.

Coming back on this. I tested earlier on my own card and it works fine. Obviously no contactless, but PIN in machine and the Cashback was fine.
