Cash deposits now available at the Post Office šŸ’°šŸ“®

Because not every bank has to be the same.

This sums it up very well.

That is true. Hopefully, the tide continues to turn on charges abroad as well. First Direct is fee-free abroad now, and apparently, HSBC has plans for the same. The more banks that offer it, the more likely the rest of the competition will follow.

This is great to see, even if there is a £1 fee. 1 step closer to enabling me to go full Monzo :sunglasses:

I personally don’t mind the fee (although of course I’d prefer it to be free). The nagging doubt I have is say I sold my car privately and got Ā£2k in cash what can I do with it with Monzo as my only bank.

It feels like there should be some option paid or free to handle these one off rare situations

I don’t trust postoffices anymore. Other day a guy cashier swapped Ā£20 note for a fake one and claimed I gave him a fake one. This was a corner shop with post office inside. I exchanged travel money back to £££ and they were checked by machine.
This limit is a joke… if I need to deposit money… That’s about Ā£1000.

I think this is handy (along with cheque imagine) for people who keep a bank account open with another bank just for the occasional cheque from Birthdays/Christmas and the odd amount of cash where the limits won’t be an issue (not that I don’t wish I got big fat cheques for my Birthday!). I fall into this category and I’ll finally be able to close that account down.

I imagine there’s a decent amount of people in that camp.

I also fall into this category but I’ll be keeping my Starling account to save paying a quid every time I pay cash in.

I occasionally have to withdraw cash to use in the very few places that don’t accept card (or have a minimum spend - don’t make me start that rant again… they get charged a percentage not a flat fee arghhhhhh)

But I do like to pay the change back into my account, so I can budget properly (otherwise that spare £15 will get spent without thinking).

I just pay into my First Direct account and transfer it to Monzo before I’ve walked out of the Post Office.

This won’t change that, so sadly there’s no use case for me. I would have loved this because it would finally make me Full Monzo (after 7 years with this bank). But I understand that it costs Monzo money, and I’d rather use this workaround and have fee-free foreign transactions.

It’s not like it needs to be one or the other. First Direct has both Post Office without a fee and fee-free abroad (I know that is rare among banks, but just pointing out that it is this community that has used fee-free abroad as a reason for Monzo charging Ā£1 for the Post Office, rather than it being a Monzo policy to be one or the other).

Out of interest, by ā€˜full Monzo’ do you mean ā€˜start paying your salary into your account and use it as your main bank’ or ā€˜use Monzo as your only bank’?

I’m in a similar camp, I occasionally have cash to pay in (the last time was when I sold something on gumtree for cash), and I also will probably just use my other account to avoid the fee. But then, honestly I’d always keep at least two bank accounts anyway, just as a backup (to have a spare card when abroad, in case my account gets closed or frozen etc).

This will probably be most handy for those selling items on Facebook marketplace.

I’ve had Ā£70 sat in my wallet for months now after a sale because I don’t have any banks nearby and I always default to paying via Amex.

Just for me, whilst the fee is only Ā£1, if I’m at a Post Office, I’m going to use the card in my wallet that’s free to deposit with…

Nice to see this added as feature but there’s really no reason for the low cash limits. Ā£1000 over 180 isn’t that much for me and I would personally be touch and go whether I would go over it. I suspect its some legal AML limit so they don’t have to do too much work on that side. I’ve had a Starling account specifically for post office deposits and if the limits were double I could probably not use the Starling at all. Ā£300 maximum makes no sense either if its Ā£1000 max over 180 days. What if I had to Ā£400 to deposit I would just have to do there and do it in 2 go’s?

Nice addition Monzo!

I rarely deposit cash but have done on a few occasions, if the fees are the same I’ll stick to PayPoint since it’s at the bottom of my street but never hurts to have more options.

Out of curiosity, how reliable is PayPoint for cash deposits these days? When it first introduced there were a lot of posts about shops refusing (or not knowing how) to accept deposits. Have things got better?

Not had a single problem yet, depositing cash from one of the KiddoW’s into my :monzo: account (Premium) to then transfer to her own 16-17 :monzo: account. Done this 4 or 5 times now.

In my/our case, the closest Post Office is 30 seconds walk from the Spar’s PayPoint so we can choose which is emptiest before doing the cash deposit. Probably the Spar. The PO is full of ebay/vinted’ers dropping off multiple small packages wrapped in bin bags.

I use it every month once as it comes with Plus and have had no issues. I primarily use Asda or Coops tho.

I just have to tell them ā€œmaybe try swiping itā€ everytime as they always try to insert the card.

Found it really useful as like most people have said it’s really close usually.

It still seems a bit of an issue if the customer has to explain how to do it.

@Rupert_W Monzo needs a page like this

Not a question but a suggestion…

I mentioned this in another thread but when you tap add money on the home screen its confusing for some that the full list of ways to add money (including cash deposit) are buried at the end of a list of bank names. I’ve encountered family members who have been confused by this screen. It would be much better if tapping add money took you directly to the ā€œother ways to add moneyā€ screen. The screen should be renamed to ā€œways to add moneyā€ and open bank transfer should be added as an option to this screen.

I’m guessing as the title suggests, this is only for deposits but not withdrawals? (yet?)
