Actually the cashier told me to go, and she had made the mistake.
Next time I’ll ask ‘are you sure?’, if the answer is in the affirmative i’ll then double check and let the people behind me in the queue wait until I am absolutely convinced.
Then there is no need to be embarrassed surely.

I don’t think the embarrassment is in being called back to the till; it’s related to the social connotations of having your card declined (i.e. you don’t have enough money). It will take a while for that feeling to erode or for all of the PEDs to be replaced to stop saying declined.
