Can you use a national insurance number as a form of id when signing up for a monzo account

my friend who is under 18 but over 16 and wants a monzo account but doesnt have a passport. can they use there NI number as identification?

No as that’s not photographic ID

Your friend can only apply if they have a valid driving license (provisional or not) or a valid Passport.

A National Insurance number is not a form of ID.

Doesn’t an NI card literally have THIS IS NOT PROOF OF IDENTITY written on the front of it??

You don’t get a card these days, you get a letter

Fair enough :+1:

Can you use the letter as identification?

Unfortunately not. Only these:

  • Passport
  • Driving licence (your provisional is fine)
  • National ID card
  • Biometric residency permit
  • Firearm or shotgun certificate
  • Electoral Identity Card issued by the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland

If that’s all you have: most high street banks will let you create an account without any ID what so ever (I had to do this for a family member - just explained they had no id then they skipped it (( although thinking about it, I could have been anyone since they never actually saw the said family member )))

Monzo requires one with a photo
