We have a ford ranger, used mostly by my wife and used for towing our caravan. Its never used for business but is classed as a comercial vehicle. I was wondering if the RAC cover would include this vehicle. I have a work van which i know wont be covered due to it being for business use bit the pickup is our family car.
What do the terms say?
The terms state that the vehicle must not be used for business, which it isnt. Although being a pickup makes it a comercial vehicle even if its just a family car. I was just concerned this may be a potential get out for recovery if we were ever in need.
One potential issue is that it was bought through my friends business, but is my wifes car mainly, and caravan tow car
I think your best bet is to speak to RAC, and get whatever they say in writing.
Yeah im thinking that may be the best idea, just to clarify. Im fine with taking other cover elsewhere but if im covered with my Monzo RAC then its a waste of money.
Your Pickup is classed as a LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) or, in other terms a light van so as per the T&C it would suggest you are covered. This of course is on the basis you’re telling the truth about the non commercial usage, and if you’re really unsure you’ll need to check first.
You are only covered for cars, light vans, motorhomes or minibuses that are less than:
a. 3.5 tonnes
b. 5.5 metres long (including a tow bar)
c. 2.55 metres wide.
PS - If you do breakdown it’s worth telling them you’ve got a Pickup, I used to have one and have also had a landrover - when that brokedown towing it on an A-Frame behind a van isn’t an option so if they know early on, they’ll just send a truck for it. Saves you time waiting
The pickup never gets used for work, its the car the kids go in, car seats etc. I have a work van fot my tools etc. I imagine i should be fine. If i ever need to use the rac ill make sure i make them.aware its a pickup to speed things up. Thanks
Why do you need a pick up if it’s not for work?
We had a mercedes 4x4 which we felt was getting a bit abused while away at the caravan. The pickup however is ideal, wet kayak, paddle board, life jackets all in the back is ideal. If it pours with rain i can store the wet awning in the back also. We like a larger car with having a young child too. It made more sense with the family activities we do.
Because they’re cool? I really miss mine, it never did a days work in its life but was ridiculous practical and basically went anywhere I pointed it at.
Because they are far more dangerous to pedestrians, damage the road surface a lot more than your average car, and simply don’t fit into the small infrastructure of UK towns and cities.
If you make use of it, fine, but if it’s to take the kids to school and back then maybe a reevaluation is needed. I’m fully on board with what Paris is doing.
You don’t live in the country, do you. Fair enough if you live in one of these and don’t really need it to cut about town grabbing your pret.
But where I leave a 4x4 is life saving and I don’t say that lightly. South Pennines, steep hills, deep fords etc, without a 4x4 you can’t get about when you need to.
I live in scotland, travel up north frequently, tow a caravan and do a lot of outdoor sports, kayak, downhill mountain biking etc so a pickup is a good fit.
The school is also a 60 sec walk from our front door so no school run necessary for us.
