Bill splitting and Shared tabs are now Monzo Split (and even better)!

Hey everyone! I’m Vani, a Product Manager in the Growth Collective :waving_hand:

I’m beyond excited to introduce Monzo Split– an even easier way to settle shared costs with friends.

We’ve brought one-off bill splitting and Running Splits (formerly Shared Tabs) together under Split.

But it’s more than just a rename.

Now, you can settle up with anyone – even if they don’t bank with Monzo or live in the UK. Plus, you can make partial payments and settle expenses from different accounts.

Head to your app now and check it out!

Two ways you can use Split

:light_bulb: Open a Running Split – Ideal for ongoing expenses such as household bills or group trips. Running Splits lets you track and manage multiple expenses over time, and when you’re ready to settle up, Monzo will do the maths for you.

:fork_and_knife_with_plate: Split one-off bills – Perfect for settling one-off expenses like dinner or a shared taxi ride. Users can quickly divide the cost among friends and settle the bill in a single click. This feature has no new changes.

:fire: What’s new with Running Splits?

:rocket: Add friends who don’t bank with us – even if they don’t live in the UK. Simply share a link so they can join as guests. They can then add their own expenses to split, track them, and mark amounts as paid.

:money_bag: Partial payments & recording outside payments – Pay people back bit by bit or all at once—whatever works best for you. If someone settles outside the Split, just mark it as ‘paid’ to keep everything on track.

:bank: Settle costs from other accounts - You can now add, split and track expenses from your Flex and Joint accounts, as well as other bank accounts (if you’ve got a paid plan)

:artist_palette: More customisation – Personalise your Splits! Edit names, change background images, and close a Split even if it’s settled outside by just marking what you owe as paid.

:collision: Try it out, let us know what you think!

Everything sounds great, apart from…

It’s a shame this was left out of being improved.

Simply being able to approve these on mass would have been a huge improvement. Instead, when you pay each one, you’re thrown back to the home screen and have to go though 3 clicks just to get back to the list again

Nice looking splash screens:

Still no Joint account support

Yes that would be great!

I’m sure I’ve been able to do this for a very long time now… :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Still no way to close a shared tab before everyone has settled.

It claims you can split transactions from connected accounts (which is very exciting) but I can’t seem to be able to do this. I have a paid account (as per its prerequisites). Can anyone else do this?

I seem to be able to create a new Running Split on a historical transaction on a connected Amex account - not that I want to go through with that fully (I got to the running split naming screen before bailing), but the mechanism seems to be there.

Ah yes I’ve worked it out. The transaction has to be a non-pending transaction to be eligible to be added. That’s a shame as it can take a few days to settle so can’t be added in the moment. I do get the rationale though

It would be nice if pending transactions could be added to splits as find it much easier to add in the moment than a couple of days later

Workaround in the meantime is to add it manually I guess

Looks great, would be nice if I could select a recurring payment from a pot/card, rather than ones from the main section

That’s what I thought too, but that’s certainly not available in my app.

Is there a way to edit the names of the “Friends” outside of Monzo before they’ve accepted the link?

If I’m sharing it to a party of people, I want to be able to manually add in the names of who I’m sending the link to, even if it pulls it from the contact the link goes to.

Makes it easier to see who’s who, unless I’m missing something?

Should I be hopeful that this ability will be extended to one off splits soon or just make my peace now?

Glad to see the improvements over all but I definitely use one off splits far more than running so won’t be seeing much difference as it stands.

Just tried this. Hmm I think I’ll just stick to the usual “Request Money” button. Be interesting to know if when the monthly bills increase will the automated shared funds update the new figures?

Please could you fix the issue where all payments you receive from other payees come back as General?

I would like a slide toggle to switch between $ and % so I can easily visualise unequal split amounts.

How is the userflow for accepting more than one payment so god awful? Surely this should have come up if you do any user testing?

Even if you won’t give us an ‘accept all’ button, if nothing else, when I accept a payment please do not take me all the way back onto a different screen. Allow me accept a payment and then take me back to the list of other payments. Also it takes too many button presses to accept a payment.

I’m sure a large percentage of users end up letting requests pile up and then they have to go through an atrocious flow to accept them all.

I honestly cannot believe how bad this user experience is.

Seconding this 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000%. So much unnecessary friction.

Sorry, we only allow 100% on here :slightly_smiling_face:
