✅ Bill Pots (previously Committed Spending Pot)

Yes it’s good… but would be so much better if I didn’t have to move it to the main pot, but works great… can’t decide if I would like a lock on that pot… just just allow payments out

Could you schedule the payment to put the money into the main pot after payday? Ooo… can we lock the pot too? I’d love to lock it for a year and use what’s left towards a hol or something x

Higher up in the thread it was mentioned that locking the pot caused problems so don’t know how that will work when the feature is released. I think it’s still in staff testing for now, though

I think the problem is something what you can do yourself in the app right now. Set a future withdrawal from a pot and then lock the pot. It will error on the day it is supposed to leave the pot because the pot is locked. I tried having my own committed spending in a locked pot a few months ago with withdrawals pre-set and got the error. Shouldn’t be hard to fix.

For what purpose or friction having a locked pot does/have you may as well remove it… and it’s fixed

Juicy update time… The code for allowing Standing Orders to be paid from Bill Pots has now been written :raised_hands:

I really hope there’s a Monzo customer somewhere called Bill Pots…

How badly did it break

It threw errors for the Payment team, so I got a lovely message from them when I got onto Slack the next day, and I had to delete the Pot and start again. When I deleted it, a bunch of Direct Debits instantly went out that had gotten put in a queue overnight :joy:

Hmmm, I thought the feature had been in the staff testing phase. Do Monzo mean that the completed code has been approved?

The initial staff testing included Bill Pots which processed Direct Debits only.
A lot of feedback to this called for Standing Orders to also be included, so that all future/commited spending could be processed via dedicated pot(s)

@simonb 's last post shows the code for Standing Order processing via dedicated pot(s) has now been finished - this is really good news :+1:

D’oh. I missed the relevance of SOs when reading the posts. That is indeed great news. Thanks for highlighting!

“But why won’t my Netflix recurring card payment come out of the Bills pot, wah wah wah”

To address continuous payment authority payments (Netflix), wouldn’t a better solution be to allocate certain suppliers to a specific pot instead of only DD’s & SO’s? Does this also mean that all DD’s and SO’s will go to the pot or just user selected ones?

That would even mean that people could have Groceries pots, Takeaway pots etc. I know people might say well that’s what budgets are for but you can overspend a budget.

It’s not a bad idea by any means. At this point personally I’d like to see this come out as MVP with DDs (and maybe SOs). Inevitably that’ll trigger requests for enhancements such as yours but those ideas have also been in this category for a while and not collected as many votes so potentially they are less desired.

What might be contributing to the demand differences is the fact that you can’t workaround either DDs or SOs with IFTTT.
