£1000 monthly ATM Limit

I’m travelling at the moment and haven’t been able to draw cash out in the last few days because of the limit. It’s supposed to be a rolling 30 days limit, but despite not having withdrawn anything in the last couple of days, nothing’s changed on my withdrawal limit. Can anyone explain why?

Hey Nazgul, can you direct message me with your email address so I can take a look?

For clarity - the rolling 30 day limit resets when you hit 30 days since a withdrawal.

So you having not withdrawn anything in the last couple days isn’t the right thing to be looking at, you need to see at what point your withdrawals were in the last month.

So for example, If you had taken out £250 on the 10th December, and every subsequent day following that until you hit the limit, then the 30 day limits would start to reset from the 10th January, and on that day you’d be able to withdraw another £250, and again the next day…

That is how it works - it is a rolling 30 day window. I think that’s what @simonb wrote in his post?

So as far as I understand it now, from what Simon said, it is a rolling window, not a cooling off period

Thanks James, I just reread the post again & I’d missed a couple of details.

I too was a bit confused with the monthly rolling limit and needed some clarification. However there are few issues with this. If I take money out from an ATM on different dates in month (not consecutively) you have to make sure you wait 30 days from each ATM withdrawal date. And let’s face it, there will be times where you will take money out on different dates.

Yes, you can look at your transaction history and see when you last took some money out, and ‘work out’ when you can make your next ATM transaction, but it’s not something I needed to do with other pre-paid cards. Dear I say it, it’s not as “smart” as the others. I think when travelling abroad where you need access to cash in an emergency, you shouldn’t have to think too much about when you can access your money. It would be better if Monzo changed so it allows withdrawals of up to £1000 (to combat fraud) each calendar month, regardless of when you take the money out.

totally agree…or the rule applies in UK but not when travelling, or rule applies in UK but an extra 25% allowed when abroad to cover emergencies

Yeah 1000 GBP in countries where cards are not readily accepted is gone in a few days of travel, hotels, and the like…

I understand in countries where cashless is reality… But lots of the world just isnt like that.

Hey Simon, thanks for this. Yes that makes more sense and I finally figured out as much too. @monzo should look into an FAQ clarifying this. The feedback I got from the team based on my query was not clear.

We’ll be adding some new FAQ documentation to our website very soon Nazgul and will be sure to include the subject or rolling limits to this for clarity :+1:

Reading the previous replies it looks like Monzo was planning to increase the 30-day £1000 ATM limit after achieving bank status. Why has this not happened yet? This limit is still a major drawback of the card when trying to travel somewhere where cash is needed for most things. Thanks

The limit is set by Wirecard who set the rules for the prepaid cards. Once the current accounts & debit cards launch, Monzo will be able to set their own limits.

Wirecard prepaid cards have different limits. A European card they offer allows €1000 a day, €2000 a week, €5000 a month and €10000 a year. These are vastly increased from Monzo’s levels.
Why is the ATM limit so low? A lot of prepaid cards on the market so I really don’t take the argument above around financial protection as others manage it. Is the cost to Monzo the real reason to restrict ATM usage?

I would have thought so - it costs Monzo a 2.5% fee outside of UK/EU for ATM withdrawals  if some people use it extensively to withdraw cash rather than using POS terminals outside of UK/EU it obviously costs Monzo a lot of money for the users to receive the benefit of good exchange rates.

You can get enhanced verification which ups your ATM limit to £2000 monthly limit , but if Monzo review your usage and see that your record of usage is outside EU and mainly cash withdrawals they might not feel inclined to give enhanced limits  -

Your £1000 limit if all cash withdrawls at ATMs cost Monzo £25/month which is unsustainable on a continuing usage - presumably Monzo would have to consider charging eventually for a few that only withdraw cash outside EU

I get that Monzo are currently running at a loss with the prepaid card scheme and that they’re minimising that loss by having these limits. which in any case should suit most travellers if they’re able to use their cards mainly at POS rather than ATM. I totally support this and see it as the perfect compromise between Monzo sensibly managing their costs to achieve their ultimate goal of profitability with current accounts and customers enjoying a fee-free service from Monzo with one of the best FX rates available.

Monzo can be very forgiving for those who need advanced limits. My nephew who’s currently 4 months into a 6-month backpacking trip around Asia recently requested the upper limits when he was close to his annual withdrawal limit. It was arranged very quickly via in-app support.

Is there any update on Monzo changing the rolling 30 day withdrawal limit to a limit per each calendar month? I saw it was maybe being considered above. I’m travelling in South America at the moment and keep getting my card declined and I find it difficult to work out when I will be able to use the card again for withdrawals. Working off a calendar month would be much simpler to know where I’m up to. Thanks

if you look under card - settings - spending limits it will tell you under the rolling 30 day limit how much you have left to withdraw - and it automatically updates itself when you can have more cash from an ATM as the 30 days are reached

Yes, but you can’t tell when it’s going to update unless you work out when you spent money the previous month but it’s quite confusing. An update each calendar month would be clearer I think

it is quite confusing, but you can search last months ATM withdrawals by typing ‘ATM’ in the search function and then using calendar if you want in search which will give you the exact dates when you withdrew money from ATMs in the last month/ quarter etc - agree not ideal money management but will tell you when more funds will become available if you take 30 days off todays date

Ok thank you, I didn’t know you could do that. Makes it a bit easier. Many thanks
