Elon musk may be the thing that finally gives mastodon enough users to reach critical mass.
£0 for mine, and I even gave myself a blue tick
“…the update said the service will provide: “Power to the people: your account will get a blue checkmark, just like the celebrities, companies, and politicians you already follow.”
Instantly making the actual desirability of the blue check mark nil.
I think you don’t have to see his tweets if you don’t want to.
I think that’s the point of what he’s doing, no?
Make them for everyone, at a higher price than people will pay. Celebrities no longer feel they’re special, average Joes that they’re not to spend $8 for something anyone can get.
Making them undesirable for all so he can turn them off.
That would be an absolutely idiotic plan and considering Musk is wanting money, this clearly isn’t his plan.
Well it is musk we’re talking about. Insane and a genius all at once. I, personally, can’t imagine people will pay $8 just to have a blue tick like everyone else.
What I can imagine though is Twitter becoming an even bigger cesspit of hate speech (yes I’m aware not all of it is) and “advertisers” flocking to provide funds via ad revenue/the Donald Trumps paying to spout their untruth’s
Who knows, I could be totally wrong
Even with him blocked (which believe me he is) his return would demonstrate a much bigger problem than just seeing his tweets. It would demonstrate that even breaking the law, inciting an insurrection that lost people their lives, spreading damaging false and incredibly harmful information, isn’t enough to get you removed from the platform. It would signal that anything goes at Twitter and it would become a cesspit.
Ticks aren’t about celebrities feeling special, it’s about us knowing it’s actually the celebrity and not an impersonator or a bad actor.
Except he doesn’t want that, he genuinely wants people’s money - if he was just trying to kill ticks off, he wouldn’t be making it so that no tick means your tweets aren’t surfaced even when you’re tweeting at someone who is following you. He’s basically invented the shadowban for Twitter.
Not for the first time, I have to say this looks like extortion. “Pay me money, or I’ll break your user experience.”
Don’t underestimate people. Plenty of people will pay just to have a different debit card.
ETA
I used to run a parody account. It stated parody in the profile (as per the rule), only had 20k followers, an avatar that clearly meant it wasn’t the real person and tweets that made it really really obvious.
People would tweet me allllll the time thinking I was the real person. They’d reply to the obvious tweets “I can’t believe you’re saying this” blah blah blah.
Give me a tick and it would be absolute chaos.
If it flies IRL, why shouldn’t it be okay on Twitter?
There’s an email going around apparently from Twitter that says people without blue ticks will be sorted to the bottom of the timeline . So basically pay to have your tweet seen
Might only be the official app though… I’ve never used it but my wife was complaining yesterday about the number of irrelevant ‘suggested’ posts that were popping up on her Twitter feed and since I’ve never seen that or knew it was a thing thought she had mistaken it for Facebook…
Am I the only one curious as to who…
What was it?
May have fired too many of the people who make things actually work…
“fix this a minute and I can sack you again”.
I’d have some not so kind words.
I don’t think it does fly in real life. In real life people can face consequences legally or personally for lying and hate speech. The anonymity or physical distance the internet provides can make some people feel brave enough to say awful things free from repercussions. But that doesn’t lessen the impact on victims.
Moderation exists in all walks of life but for some reason Elon thinks Twitter should be the exception.
I know, but you could only get “verified” in the old days by being someone special.
Just to note I agree on this post, a dark time ahead for what was a great platform, once.
