X (Formerly Twitter) Discussion

Ah good, as long as the searching keeps you occupied. Enjoy :slightly_smiling_face:

Maybe I was right. I also have no idea how to quote properly.

No. I would genuinely circle all the phones and tech in an Argos Catalogue. And the Lego as well.

:eyes:

You do you. I think Argos stopped printing them but I’m sure other shops still offer physical.

In reality I probably wouldn’t. Idk. And also it’s be so much easier to just go online now that glenmcfar has explained that “Technology is ok”

Also with regards to your earlier messages, you shouldn’t have to explain your own choices about kids to people on here just because they can’t comprehend living in the 21st century, and things being a little different. The only person’s business it is is yours and your partners.

Aww. Thank you, Jo.

I feel bad about calling you out in other threads now… whenever you use non-words etc.

I mean, I don’t feel bad enough to stop doing it but it’s the thought that counts. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m not directing this at you personally, but a lot of the people who judge and complain about kids on tablets in restaurants are the first ones who would get annoyed if the kids weren’t occupied and sitting quietly minding their own business!

On the one hand, I think moving away from X is a good thing.

On the other, it upsets me slightly that big names like this are using .bsky.social handles instead of their own domain names

This is somthing I see on Masotodon all the time. So many brands using mastodon.social, when it really isn’t hard to set up your own server.

Feels like hosting your website on Geocities or having an email address at Yahoo.

That said…if you have your own server acme.com you also have to have acme.bsky.social to prevent pretenders. It is an issue with the multiverse that there is nothing to stop someone using your name/username on Mastodon with multiple different servers. At least with Twitter/X you had your name and there would be _ or - or numbers there to show it wasn’t you.

Decided to make the plunge about a fortnight ago and left Twitter, ran a script to delete all 21,000 Tweets, stuck it on private cause of that stupid Block change (despite me having no posts now) and will just keep it now for as and when.

Will still open it every now and again to see what’s been happening (news/trends/friends who I met on there) but for the most part, I’ve left - something I never thought I’d do and would ride the tide, but dear lord it’s become for me an unbearable place to be.

Bluesky feels like a breathe of fresh air but I also feel like I’ve exhausted my need for these types of social sites, they’ve now become a nice to have rather than a need to have for me.

I’ve done the same now. I noticed that my science/work twitter was starting to empty out and the stream of people promoting their cool new paper or latest ideas was basically nil now. So moved over my “work” twitter but still have my old one on X.

I have a personal Bluesky too and I find while my algorithm gives me more “lefty”, “liberal”, “soy boy” news outlets I’m down with that. X destroyed my faith in humanity over the summer. It made me genuinely fearful of other people. Which granted will probably mean people think I’m being silly/stupid. I’d say currently my BlueSky feeds are far more alive than X or Threads. I can see within the next year X just becoming modern day 4Chan.

But BlueSky need a better verification system, which I believe some of the bods said they are working on.

If it continues to pick up users, this will slowly change though - for better or worse, people will eventually follow the masses.

Nah, I’m in agreement with you - I feel like I see nothing but the worst in people on there now its like the wild west, it just doesn’t feel like a pleasant place to spend my time.

Bluesky I find myself opening way less, but feel like that’s currently by design (they don’t run ads so have no reason to keep you on there scrolling) and X I open maybe once a day for 5 minutes just to quickly catch up on anything I missed.

I have noticed I do miss quite “pressing” events though such as the unrest in South Korea yesterday, as Twitter is where I used to get my news as I tend to shy away from traditional media.

They are indeed, will be interesting to see what they come up with - trying to follow journos at the moment is a nightmare, impossible to see who is who and what’s legitimate.

Very true, but one hopes that the apparent commitment to moderation unlike X means it shouldn’t get as overtly toxic and hostile.

I’ve not found this to be an issue as a lot of journo’s and a few newspapers cross post onto BlueSky now. So news wise its not been an issue at all. Although I don’t really rely on SM for news I have subs to The Economist and New Statesman for news and analysis I’m interested in and I dip into the BBC News site and The Guardian throughout the day when I’m having a little break.

So all in all I want to see X fall apart and be replaced. However, do I think the replacement will eventually end up the same? Absolutely
