I don’t know much about it, but do they need third party involvement? I understood that they would use App Store credit so that your App Store balance would be a de facto prepaid card, but only for use in P2P payments.
Just googled and it says it comes off your debit card.
I assumed with the word cash it was a way to get cash not just another P2P function
BELOW IS PURE CONJECTURE
️
Maybe the monzo.me service doing exactly the same thing is causing issues with the
Pay implementation here
My understanding is the holding account is the third party and not Apple.
Apple might be able to pull money off a debit card to pay Apple Pay Cash, but it can definitely hold a balance too. Apple has a guide on how to Transfer money from Apple Pay Cash to your bank account.
Some further detail. The holding account is provided by green dot bank.

Is that just money that’s been sent to you via Apple Pay Cash tho? Seems to be what they’re saying. So you couldn’t use it to withdraw from one account and move it to another
Love the way it says you can get bank details easily from your check book
Greed has a very different meaning doesn’t it
It was a more honest name
Think of Apple Pay cash as a digital wallet card (Apple branded but underpinned by a green dot bank digital card)
So you can top it up, pay with it digitally, withdraw from it, send to others with it.
I know I sound a bit thick but I’d never seen Apple Pay until I joined here. Yes had heard of it’s existance but never seen anyone use it, anyone who had it or anyone even talk about it. I’d still say 90% of people I see in shops use chip and pin rather than contactless here
Where I live in northern England, chip and pin is still the favourite method of card payments and cash is very well alive and kicking.
Even funnier, when I attempted to use Apple Pay in the Apple Store in Manchester for a small priced item, Smile declined the Apple Pay authorised payment and blocked the card from being used in Apple Pay.
Because we know to judge banks on more than whether they support Apple Pay?
I think it’s fair to judge Apple Pay considering monzo is all for being ‘the future of banking’
My experience is skewed because of the industry I am in. So I see a lot of payments by watch and phone. And also see a lot of cards from startups being used to understand the competitions progress
I have to say, frustratingly while not adding to the complaints of this thread, I am having to use card as I am using Monzo for payments. It does feel an inconvenience as I need to fish out my wallet when I have 4+ other cards in my Apple wallet.
Happy to put up with this for now as I have confidence it will eventually appear.
From what I can gather you ‘get’ the card only when someone sends you cash, but once you have it it’s on your phone, and it’s essentially just a prepaid card that you can then use the card anywhere that accepts Apple Pay*, withdraw the cash to your bank, and even top up the card from your bank, as seen as options here:
*anywhere in the US, the current ‘American card’ probably wouldn’t be accepted most places here since it’s a ‘Discover’ card which are accepted pretty much nowhere in the U.K…
It does have an awesome ‘Easter egg’ in that the card is ‘shiny’… as you move your phone the card changes colour:

I understand you also won’t be able to pay people in different countries due to different currencies
Apple Pay Cash is moving even slower than Monzo’s Apple Pay integration!
Could the delay be related…
Sorry
will get my coat
I live in a sleeply little village (that likes to call itself a town) and quite a few of the shops here accept Discover card, though few have ever seen one ![]()
