What's the worst feature of your legacy bank?

They leave it ambiguous on purpose. Basically they are fine if the maintenance takes 3 hours as planned, but if it takes longer they are covered.

Oh I know why they do it! I do it myself at work, give myself a 6 hour window instead of the 5 minutes I actually need

This is pretty annoying, c/o the Lloyds app:

You have to tap “You have pending transactions” to be told “You don’t have any pending transactions”

Trolled by an app.

The worst experience I ever had with a bank/building society was with Nationwide.

They blocked my entire account due to “security concerns”, two days before Christmas Eve, a few years ago.

Apparently, they had sent some promotional guff through the post to me, and it was sent back to them with “Not Known At This Address” written on the envelope.

My address is an issue at times, as there are two doors numbered 10 on the same street. I live at 10 Blah Blah Court, on Blah Blah Street. It seems that the postman had taken the Nationwide’s letter to 10 Blah Blah Street.

Obviously, I was totally unaware of this. The Nationwide had my mobile phone number, landline phone number, and email address. They could have contacted me at any point to ask if I’d “gone away”… But they didn’t. They just blocked my entire account.

I could log into their internet banking, but couldn’t see my current account, only a loan account. My debit card was blocked. When I first telephoned them after trying to use the debit card, I actually assumed I’d been hacked somehow, and someone had emptied the account.

It took them two days to unfreeze the account. I was fuming. Whenever I saw that TV advert with the red scarf, I was enraged!

I’ve found their security protocols bizarre. I used to buy mobile phone top ups with my Nationwide credit card. Every other month the payment would fail and my card be blocked “for my own protection.” So the same regular transaction was flagged as potential fraud and yet when an actual fraud did occur, it did so in spite the much lauded “Verified by Visa.”

Barclays wouldn’t let me login to the mobile app because I had to bring two forms of ID to the branch, as they ’ couldn’t verify me’ , but I could log in on my phone browser and empty the account…

That I cannot easily set up a new regular payment or large denomination single payment without having to dig around and find a silly card reader and enter all sorts of weird codes on it.

Have to do it via the web as the mobile app won’t do it.

New one for Nationwide. You can now add a new payee to send money to via their app…

… Provided you have the card reader device you verify. Once again making the app surprisingly redundant.

Though slight workaround the other day. Transfered money from my nationwide account to Monzo as already exist as a payee, then forwarded money to my new payee from monzo (winning  )

If they weren’t lazy they could (at least on Android) use the phone as a card reader and only ask you to tap the card on the phone to verify… but we’re talking about Nationwide so this will never happen. :joy:

So many things but probably the most annoying for are the very slow balance updates, often days behind which can leave you in the dark about whats going on with your finances. I also hate having to transfer money to new recipients, especially when I need to do it on my smartphone

This reminded me of a time like 5 years ago now where I went in branch to increase my overdraft. I had to endure the usual trying to sell me every product under the sun, none of which were either useful and/or eligible for. Anyway they agreed the new limit and off I went.

It wasn’t until I was away on holiday and tried to buy something that I found out that instead of increasing my overdraft, they had removed my overdraft facility completely! Now, luckily for me, I was only on holiday in Northern Ireland so was able to frantically locate a Santander branch miles away and go and get it sorted!

I now do all my interactions with Santander via the Post Office so I don’t get pounced on with crap I don’t need which seemingly distracts the staff from doing what I need them to do!

I just hope that Marketplace doesn’t replace those sellers/tellers in the branch. I don’t want an app that flashes up all sorts of ads for products I may neither want nor need.

Just got this from RBS… another reason why I hate them…

We recently let you know that from 13th January, payments into your account will no longer be made over the weekend. So don’t get caught short. Make sure you have enough funds available to last you until Monday morning.
What are the changes?
From 13th January 2018, the way regular payments (like your salary, your benefits payments, your pension or other repeat income) go into and come out of your account(s) like Direct Debits and Standing Orders over the weekend will change, and your available balance may be affected.

So when everyone else is moving towards instant payments these morons are doing the exact opposite…

I recently signed up to B (£250 bribe). Their app is ok. Not great, as no running balance. But they do insist on sending paper statements. Now I need to find a shredder.

No, I think they are just changing payments and debits to happen on the days they are supposed to. This is all second-hand (I don’t have a NatWest or RBS account), but as I understand it, at the moment if you are due a direct credit (e.g. salary payment) on a Monday, it will be credited to you on the Saturday before. From next year, they will credit it on a Monday. I think. Someone with an RBS group account might able to confirm.

Yes that is correct currently direct debits due out on Monday (or Tuesday if Monday is a bank holiday) show on the Saturday and the same with bank credits e.g. Salary payments - from January they will show on the Monday (or Tuesday)

So providing greater clarity in fact.

I did use to like when l got paid on a Friday rather than having to wait until Monday when banked with NatWest.

It’s not my legacy bank, but this should be worrying :scream:
