We're rethinking Monzo Plus bundles (and some other updates!)

Everybody needs* to get contents insurance

The picture is much more muddy for buildings insurance. I live in a flat so the freeholder needs to sort it for all of us. Lots of people rent so they do not need it. And so on and so on

(*=Not the law and ultimately depends on risk appetite, but does work for everybody in every setting)

So that means % wise more people who have Monzo rent rather than own their home?

On reflection I suppose monzo do have a certain demographic they are trying to attach!

Buildings insurance is incredibly complicated compared to contents.

There are so many risk factors that depend on all sorts of things - itā€™s not really something that can have a fixed price very easily which is why it probably wasnā€™t viewed as an option for a package like this.

In a marketplace it would work, but it would be quite risky for Monzo to spread risk on this one.

i have no idea

Everyone i know with a mortgage arranged it through their mortgage lender and have never thought about changing it

That is the oldest practice ever?
I donā€™t know anyone who has done that?
Maybe in the 1990s but not since!

ok. But here it is very common. You go to a mortgage advisor and they sort it all out

Some will be the lender and somne with insurance companies the advisor is linked to

Must admit Iā€™ve stayed with my current provider since my original mortgage.

Weā€™re execution only, so I assume we get best rates because it has very little human interaction.

I am very happy to read this update, Iā€™m so glad that you guys have taken the feedback on board and are taking some time to rethink the strategy

I will definitely consider resubscribing to Plus once we find a new direction!

Iā€™d be interested to see how many people cancelled as a result of the bundle announcement.

Thanks for the update @Sheri

A welcome announcement (left me feeling all warm and fuzzy) :relaxed: :+1:

Iā€™d go for loads, as this is a very quick turnaround.

Iā€™d agree. I know I did, and mentioned that it was the switch to bundles that caused it and removal of interest.

Well I canā€™t say another u turn surprises me after the recent train wreck but hey, at least youā€™re finally listening to us now!

Like some others, I firmly believe your selling point was in the customisability and you should keep exploring that. Change the UI and the sign up flow, give people more meaningful benefits (no more crappy link ups with London centric companies) and maybe take your time on this one and donā€™t rush it, even though you like to move fast. If you listen to one thing there itā€™s that last bit - fast iteration has NOT done you any favours and thereā€™s nothing wrong with changing pace if it results in a better product.

Itā€™s in demand by people who own buildings. :grimacing:

Probably not demanded from their banks because they go to an insurance company for insurance. Also, underwriting buildings insurance is possibly more complex than contents insurance?

Buildings insurance is also very expensive in comparison to contents insurance.

Plus, how many people own their own home compared to how many rent? The likelihood is there are more people who rent so should really get contents insurance. Landlords/ladies should also get contents insurance so potentially 1 property might be covered by contents insurance twice making it a much more popular insurance product out of the 2

And as above I do ā€œownā€ my home, but I still do not sort contents insurance myself as it is a shared building. Itā€™s not just renters

Yeah of course, not everyone has contents insurance seeing as itā€™s not necessarily mandatory, but if itā€™s a shared building then thereā€™ll probably be a few that insure their own parts of it because landlords/ladies/property management companies will likely only insure contents to a certain extent e.g. built-in ovens but not tenantā€™s personal jewellery and so on.

Even if you own part of a shared building, it doesnā€™t always mean your own personals are covered by those who own the shared building overall.

But again, Iā€™m thinking more on why Monzo would choose to offer contents insurance without buildings insurance. Ultimately I guess contents insurance would be more common regardless of whether youā€™re a homeowner, renter, house sharer etc.

I currently pay various people for buildings, contents, and breakdown cover. Sometimes holiday insurance but itā€™s always single trip for under Ā£20. And I have a dentist plan.

If I could cover some or all of that more conveniently with Monzo and have it cost a reasonably similar amount but be less effort, Iā€™d go for it.

Iā€™d rather I didnā€™t have to mess about calculating the value of X% interest in order to know if the overall price is competitive. Yes I like interest, but only if you compare it with ā€œno interestā€, not if you compare it with transparent pricing!

Iā€™m really not interested in a load of random ā€œdiscount off your first whateverā€ offers, I get enough of those in my letterbox, theyā€™re just another thing I have to remember to cancel or else get stung later. They say ā€œmarketing scamā€ to me not ā€œgreat value bundleā€.

The moment I have to include stuff I donā€™t want like phone insurance, is the moment it stops being good value; I buy my phones second hand on ebay so itā€™s always cheaper for me to buy a new phone than to buy insurance. I definitely do not need clothes, stickers, or any of that. But if you sent flowers on my birthday that would be a win!

I could possibly also be persuaded to pay for BUPA or a gym chain or a discount media bundle of some sort?

But ultimately it has to be reasonably good value for me. It really is not THAT much more effort to use price comparison sites to get insurance. A package would be worth more if you can be really clear that all the chosen providers have good customer service - unlike price comparison shopping where until I make a claim itā€™s hard to know whether the experience will be regrettable.

I have building and contents insurance on the house I ā€œownā€.

Itā€™s dirt cheap. Something like Ā£14 a month with a crazy amount of cover for both everything I own and the cost to rebuild the house should it fall down.

I am up north so the value of my property isnā€™t a lot compared to London but on the flip side itā€™s sizeable :man_shrugging:

Whoops, meant buildings insurance. Unfortunate brain fart

I do have contents insurance, but not everyone who owns can or does have buildings insurance
