IMO the new Starling card design is rank. Just because something is done differently doesnât automatically make it modern or forward-thinking tbh.
I used my teal vertical Starling debit card in a restaurant the other evening with a group of friends and it caused quite a stir.
There were three sorryâlooking Monzo cards in the heap too, unmentioned ![]()
Wait until I drop my N26 card.
Youâre right, but the Starling debit card is, objectively, both modern and forwardâthinking.
Iâve got a Starling card. The black font on the back looks really cheap and awful. For me itâs the worst part of Starling.
Mineâs white!
If by âdone differentlyâ you mean ânever been done beforeâ, then it is by definition both modern and forward-thinking. Of course, that doesnât make it nice to look at.
I quite like the vertical design, but wish the teal wasnât quite so sparkly looking.
Not sure how you can have a forward-thinking debit card? It is modern though but then so is every other debit card on the market, objectively speaking
Similar with the new Curve card. It looks good, and I expect its a recent change to the Mastercard standards that allow it to happen.

Hey @anon65924170 ,
Hope you donât mind but Iâve merged your thread with an existing one on the same topic.
Feel free to continue the discussion
One of the interesting things about Starling is that in Apple Wallet, the card is landscape (as all the cards are) while the physical card is portrait. Iâm assuming any others are the same as they have a forced landscape orientation on payment cardsâŚ
Just an FYI, I ended up writing a long form article on our entire process with the debit card and welcome pack design:
Hey @anon58848200, itâs been posted here: Aussie bank welcome pack
Not a bank card but the coop card is vertical and looks surprisingly sharp.
Very interesting read! Thanks
Coâop card is nice and tactile.
Yep, I was really surprised by how nice it felt and looked when I got it.
Iâm confused⌠whatâs the advantage of a vertical card over a horizontal one?
- Makes marginally more sense for common interactions like inserting, tapping
- Looks cool
