I mean, I was never clear why Verizon bought Tumblr in the first place. Wordpress kinda makes more sense since at least they’re a blogging company but still, it seems odd.
I guess it came with the package when they bought Yahoo a few years ago, from what I heard it was a decent revenue driver for Oath (now Verizon Media)
For 99.7% less than Yahoo paid for it.

This is actually a really interesting interview with Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Automattic/Wordpress.
I’ve always thought there was something pretty special about Tumblr, but AOL and Verizon basically left it to rot - no surprises there. It’ll be interesting to see what happens under Matt’s leadership.
