This only appears once a request fails. If it’s still in flight you see nothing, and on a bad connection the request might stay in flight forever up to the connect/read timeout of the app which is usually around 30 seconds.
Thank you for taking the time to write this up. I’ll be travelling to Vancouver at the end of August for 10 days, and this has set my mind at ease. I’ll be taking a small risk and not taking any currency with me, and using an atm at the airport to get my free atm allowance in dollars for emergencies, but aiming to primarily use monzo for the whole trip.
I’ve told Natwest where I’m going just in case, but judging by this, I don’t anticipate any issues!
One thing I wanted to ask… What’s contactless like over there?
Cheers,
Jon
Contactless over there isn’t as good as the UK but if you’re in major stores they’ll have it. Some smaller ones will too.
Contactless is also up to $100 CAD, not limited to £30 so you can use it for much more.
The reason is that in Canada Hospitality staff get paid a special, really low hourly rate (a category below minimum wage!) as tips are factored into their pay as income, not a ‘bonus’ - furthest thing from a ‘Living wage’ you could imagine. AND, most of the tips are shared amongst ALL staff in a tip ‘pool’ so the server actually gets even less of what you leave…It’s a bonus for us expats in Europe that servers get a living wage and we don’t have to worry about it here…
