The Year Ahead, 2018

I agree with this… None of these things actually affect me but I can’t be the only one that was a bit worried by this blog post…

It basically looks like hardly anything is changing in 2018. And the things mentioned 90% of the time for people’s reason not switching to Monzo have not been mentioned at all… (apart from CASS)

Yeah, a lot of users are voicing their concerns here, however there are over 211k current account users who are not. I wonder how many of them feel the way those active on this topic do. Perhaps slightly more transparency is needed on the issues users are raising on this key blog post for 2018?

Would love some input from the incredible forum leaders! @alexs @HoddzDJ @Avishai @tomsr

Couldn’t agree more.

I agree - but then the users of this forum are so passionate about Monzo because we can see its potential. I wonder how many of the other current account users - like me - thought that the all singing, all dancing, much anticipated current account would absolutely include Apple Pay… and then when it didn’t just quietly stopped using their account.

I’m vocal because I want Monzo to succeed and I find it breathtaking that other startups (eg Starling) recognised this was a key feature in a way that Monzo appear not to have by avoiding any mention in their 2018 roadmap.

I agree there are a lot of customers who are not involved in the forum. I personally think those of us who have been on here for a while, who have seen features promised as being “soon” for a long time and then never delivered are probably more concerned than those who are not engaged here.

That said as much as I want some of these features e.g. Apple Pay, DD Enrichment etc. Monzo is currently a lot better than my legacy bank is

I think that’s fair Chris, I too have been on this forum since I got my account and have been through the frustration of seeing features talked about but then quietly forgotten.

But for how long?

I know two people and I’m sure there’s more.

I’m right behind Monzo and will still refer people and speak well of them but will we have to wait till 2019 for features we really want?

Other than notifications Monzo no longer have any features my legacy bank doesn’t already have, they’re now missing features which is a real shame.

I think this is why Monzo need to rapidly step up development of features this year and also get a move on with shutting down the PP system so they can focus on the CA features 100%

This is my thought. I’ve had a lot of reflection over the past few weeks and I’ve come to this conclusion, it’s a harsh reality but it’s true.

The only reason legacy banks are behind is because they currently have to be, they have a lot of elderly clients that refuse to use the online features etc and branches remain open for them.

Eventually it will come a point where legacy banks do everything the same that Monzo and other Fintech startups do. And mobile and online banking will become their main focus. (effectively in a few years time when all the people that refuse to get rid of their passbooks move on to a better world)

What will Monzo, Starling etc do then that legacy banks won’t with more security and funding?

Nothing sadly.

I wouldn’t hold on to 3D Secure so tightly. It’s due to change soon (2.0) and the current version may somewhat get thrown out the window with PSD2. I still have cards from HSBC that can’t be used with 3DS due to a registration issue.

That’s quite the speculation. Glass half empty too. Do you know something everybody else doesn’t? I’d love a link or quote that implies that once they’re at feature parity, they’ll stop developing features.

Are you actually aware of Monzo and Starlings goals? Like, what they actually plan on implementing.

If you were, I’m sure you’d know that aren’t even trying to compete with the banks. (Mortgages, loans, insurance etc)

Yes I’m well aware, thanks.

We shall see :smirk:

Note that legacy banks will also keep developing features - I personally think they will all end up similar to Monzo, Monzo is currently just thinking further ahead

Hi Ollie, thanks for the flattering shout out.

I guess my take on it is “I want everything now too!”, but I have to be realistic.

The Big Four have got hundreds of years on Monzo, Lloyds can be traced back to 1765, Barclays - 1690, HSBC - 1865, and RBS - 1727. Monzo - 2015. They were founding members of every payment scheme out-there, and Monzo was always going to have a tough time muscling in there. I’m honesty so impressed with how far the product, and Monzo, has come in such a short space of time. They haven’t even had their banking licence unrestricted for year.

Yes, the lack of rolling out of new features has been frustrating whilst they’ve been scaling up the Current Account. Naturally, we all want to see the product grow and get better and better every day. For me, the Account actually does everything I want it to do right now. I don’t have any major complaints. I still use Nationwide for a Joint Account, and I’m fine with that. I don’t necessarily need an ‘all boxes ticked’ account with Monzo.

What I do have in an account that gives me very detailed spending patterns with over two years of data, I get my salary paid in, I’ve got some Pots set up for exciting things that I know I can afford because it’s ‘ring fenced’, all my Direct Debits are moved over (not without a bit of pain, but that was to be expected as I was Preview User), customer service is the best I’ve ever experienced (no, I’ve not used First Direct!), I know at a glance what money I’ve got available and I can pay my friends (and more importantly they can pay me back) with almost zero friction, which can also be said for the account in general.

I could do with 3D secure for the one website I use that requires it, and of course Apple Pay would be a nice-to-have. I don’t use International Payments or have any requirement for them right now. CASS isn’t a requirement as I’ve already moved everything over.

I’m excited to see what Monzo do with Pots, but I’m most looking forward to Spending upgrades - such as ‘Committed Spends’, start of month customisation, and maybe an estimated ballpark figure of what I’ll have left at the end of the month.

tl:dr - I think Monzo is doing great for such a young start up Bank and I’m more than happy with the current offering, but I’m really excited for, and want, some new features - because, well, ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I think I’m going to have to write Monzo off until 2019.

I’m off to Australia for a year in April and would’ve considered leaving my money in my Monzo account (using pots etc.) if international transfers were likely to be implemented but unfortunately they aren’t.

I’ve been using Starling for day-to-day payments recently as they have Apple Pay so I’ll stick with them as my spending account and leave my funds in Nationwide I guess!

I understand that some people are disappointed with the lack of a certain feature at the moment, however I’d just like to point out a few things that make Monzo stand out for me as being above the rest despite the lack of this feature.

  1. Fantastic Customer Service - Whenever I speak to anyone at Monzo they always make me feel like an individual and not just Customer 2615281. I don’t feel like I’m being read or chatted to from a script and I’m sure there have been people here that have had something delivered to them instead of just being told to wait the predefined time

  2. Product/Service Roadmaps - Monzo are quite clear about what they are designing and working towards. Do we know of any other legacy bank that gives clear timescales or even tell their customers what they are working on?

  3. Community - One of the biggest advantages is the community that Monzo have. We may not be perfect all the time and there are times where we nag and whine until we get what we want but again how many other legacy banks offer a forum for their users to get in touch?

Monzo are a great bank. They are personable. We can talk to them and they regularly talk to us. We get to know them as people and often we’ve even seen people grow from customers to staff! Isn’t that wonderful to see?

I’m in a happy mood. I love Monzo. Thanks for all that you do and keep up the great work.

This is lovely.

But at the end of it all, it’s just a Bank Account

what I think is sometimes forgotten is until the “challenger” banks came along most of the “legacy” banks couldn’t really give a toss about offering apps , instantaneous notifications of spends , budgeting features etc etc - these new offerings from them are mostly down to “challenger” banks innovations over the last 3 years.
To say Legacy banks are catching up , maybe, maybe not , this I feel is assuming that the “challengers” will now stand still as well- they obviously won’t and should be more flexible in innovation than the Legacy models , yes some on the forum are disappointed at the pace of new features being rolled out , yet the current account sign up keeps on rolling at about 2000 sign ups every day
Monzo have sometimes been kicked to death for talking up their offering and then not delivering in the specified time , things overrun, problems occur , new systems take more time than envisaged - hype , maybe - then in the 2018 update some have said is that it ? - a case of once bitten twice shy maybe, lets hope they deliver some spectacular updates this year - or users can come on the forum and tell forum users why such and such is a “deal breaker for me” and I have stopped using Monzo because …

For legacy banks mobile features are currently an afterthought.

They are because of old people. Monzo doesn’t target old people, and eventually banks will be targeting the same users that Monzo does.

That is when the game will change. And in all honesty I think that’s why people decided to make AI like Cleo instead of a Challenger bank

In the long run the gap will be closed. Let’s just hope Monzo keeps up

“old people” - lol Im almost 60 - its the new 40 apparently , but maybe thats just us decrepit old people that say that

Yep, theres a small few out there. But until they get rid of the moaners, passbook hoarders and branch lovers, mobile banking will remain an afterthought.
