The Monzo Current Account Preview

They want to get up to 1000, then if there are no problems ramp up to 5000 and then 20000. These are (obviously) bigger numbers and the office can only accomodate around 150 at a time so I would assume once it’s at 1000 they will probably start posting them out as well as maybe still holding the events as well.

So far my only issue with the current account is the font of the account number in the card details area.
Is there any chance it could be made bigger or the number broken up in some way?
Not sure why I find it so hard to read but it’s a bad number to get wrong when you’re typing it into stuff!

Thinking about it, it would be cool if the app could read the number out to you so you could check it on any form you typed it into? Perhaps not good in public but nice when in a safe area.

Oh. So I’ve been using Mon(d)zo for ~year for all that I can, (i.e. just not DD, SO, faster payments, et al.) using the Beta version of the app, on the forums a fair bit, pledging but not being selected in investment rounds, but that’s not enough to ‘register my interest’, so I’m whoknowshowfar down the list because I first saw it a few weeks after posting… Damn.

I am going to France next week for a few days and will be relying on Monzo the whole time. Unfortunately I switched my main banking to Starling already (back when this card processor wasn’t as bad) which means I have no other card to rely on (Starling is also affected by these problems). If anyone from Monzo sees this, would it be possible for me to get a current account as an exception? I was fine with the occasional outages but nowadays it seems to be happening every day and I’m no longer feeling good about this.

I’ve crossed off sky broadband from the list as this is now being accepted online. Hoorah :beers:

Fingers crossed. I’ve got my credit card as a last resort but I’d rather not give them any excuses to charge me extra fees as I’m sure they won’t miss the fact that I’m paying abroad. :sweat_smile:

@anon23935806 I was in the same predicament in Spain I have my bank switched to Starling and was using my Monzo card as my holiday card. I has my credit card but thankfully didn’t have to use. Fingers crossed you’ll have same luck and will be fine like me.

I think you’ll be OK then. You’ve got a backup for any unexpected downtime, but you should be fine for the majority.

There were some more details on the timescales for the current account rollout in Tom’s email / blog post about today’s outage :smiley:

We’re increasing the numbers of current accounts every month, with 20,000 available by September across iOS and Android. Our aim is to make the current account available to everyone at some point in October or November.

The “don’t ask support to bump you up the queue” left me with the assumption that it was a queue. As a Monzo user and Monzo CA user-hopeful, I’m glad that it’s not; as a Briton, I’m appalled. :scream:

If someone opened up a business that did custom wraps for cards, they’d have a big monzo customer base…

If you tap and hold on either field you can copy the numbers. I usually paste them into Evernote, which syncs with my other apps & the web, so I can easily paste them into a form from my desktop, or a different banking app.

I’m surprised at how many organisations etc will not recognise the 04-00-04 sort code. I’ve been trying to update my direct debits and it is very frustrating. I now have some with the new Monzo CA and some with my current bank account.

How will the sort code get updated so it works?

Some people are telling me it is maybe not a UK sort code (see message below) - what is the situation please?

Tell the organisation that they need to update their list of valid sort codes. Once an organisation does that, :monzo: should be valid for them.

Sort codes change all the time. The last time I changed my bank account details at work for my salary, payroll had to manually enter my Barclays sort code because they could not find it.

HSBC are writing to some customers giving them new sort codes as they are ringfencing their UK business under the rules introduced after the financial crisis in 2008. You can bet your life those customers will have these kinds of problems too.
