Teaching high school children about online financial scams - ideas

In February, we ‘celebrate’ Safer Internet Day.
We usually do some sort of coding task/competition/etc, but this year we’d like to use that week to run a whole-school thread on online scams.

While I have incorporated the topic of scams in e-safety and cyber security lessons for many years, and I do see that most youngsters have a pretty good grasp on what might be a scam and what might not (often a much better grasp than adults), I would like to really go to town with this one!

I want to create a set of resources (which will most likely be a Powerpoint together with an online quiz or leaflet of some sort) that can be used by any teacher to teach about online scams, but that can be also read by parents and anyone else wanting to educate themselves on current scam tactics.

And this is where I could use your help! :hugs:
While I know a lot (I believe) about online scams, I don’t know everything, and I am sure there are many types of scams or many experiences I’ve not heard of before.

In this thread, could you please describe any or all of the following:

  • current scam tactics, frequently seen scams, scams that have been attempted on you or friends/family (and if they were successful or not)
  • what do you yourself do to keep safe from scams
  • what you tell others (friends/family) to help them avoid getting scammed
  • what would you have liked to have been taught in school, or been told by someone else, that you had to find out by yourself regarding online scams
  • anything else at all relevant that you think should be in such educational material

I will gladly share all resources here when they are done :ok_hand:

This sounds really interesting :eyes:

I’ll see what information I can get from some of the teams and maybe get them to swing by with some of their own insight :+1:

Wow, thank you Alan, that would be amazing! If we could get some insight from a bank’s point of view that would put a whole new spin to it!
