Target workarounds?

This may not be possible, and maybe rightly so. But I’m wondering if anyone does anything in order to get around targets for potentially carrying forward perhaps any excess from the month before into the new month?
For example, I buy an item but take it back for a refund. Buy a different item in it’s place. However the refund for the first item doesn’t come through until the next month.

Now yes I can basically just write it off and know in my head that I have the money, it just bothers me when I’m using it for budgeting reasons that I can’t lock this down. Annoyingly it happens to me more often than it probably should - especially around refunds.

I don’t think this should necessarily be something Monzo builds in, because it undoes the idea of the budget a bit I guess. But I wondered if there had been any workarounds that people have devised?
I use excluded categories, but then that excludes the item I’ve bought altogether, which I need to account for it somehow otherwise I think I have more money than I do!

Any help or suggestions are much appreciated.

You can’t refer the refunds to another month unfortunately.

Trends and targets would still be accurate.

The alternative is to create a “Spent and returned” category which is excluded from Trends.

You’d go back, adjust spend category to the above, and also the refund to the category above, so neither are considered.
