Switched from Monzo to a legacy bank (Barclays) šŸ’«

Talking of cheques - does Monzo have cheque imaging in-app for paying in cheques on the roadmap?

Well, I donā€™t recall any comments specifically - but they do have the US on their roadmap, and it would be impossible for a bank without this to be taken seriously in the US market.

Unfortunately, the back end processing is so different that just because they launch the feature in the US doesnā€™t mean they will here.

It might not be on the roadmap, but it could still happen this year. Itā€™s something theyā€™re actively looking at.

That notice was on the app for maybe two days prior to the work? But I still get what youā€™re saying about it being inconvenient.

Iā€™ve actually opened an account with Barclays just to get the pot functionality that Monzo lacks. I now have a number of named pots with standing orders doing all the work. Its not perfect but its an improvement over what I had before. I now push a weekly sum of money down to Monzo as my spending money and let my main current account do all the heavy lifting. Like you, Iā€™ll keep an eye on Monzo development but at the moments it all feels quite far off especially when you look at features that were requested a couple of years ago and still missing.

I guess you mean Starling - I donā€™t think Barclays do Pots like Monzo and Starling.

One thing keeping me on a legacy bank is the ability to have multiple accounts. I donā€™t run my finances the way Monzo wants me to, so it just isnā€™t feasible for me. Pots are kind of getting there, but without full functionality I wonā€™t be making a proper switch anytime soon.

Startling donā€™t have rules for pots either do they?

I do mean Barclays though, only takes seconds to open a savings account. You can name the saving accounts and setup standing orders to manage money in and out of those pots. You canā€™t do ā€œsave the chargeā€ or sweeps but in its current state its still proving more functionality than Monzo or Starling. I do still use Monzo but Iā€™m pretty much using it as a day to day spending account but Iā€™d probably be better off transferring my daily spending money to an account which provides cashback or rewardsā€¦ might have to look into that

If you are with Barclays, have Ā£800 per month incoming, and two or more Direct Debits, Blue Rewards are what Iā€™d consider a no-brainer. Even better if you have home insurance, mortgage or a loan with them. (If you are not with them, or are willing to switch, there are other banks that give you more, though.)

Sorry word Pot is just not associated with legacy banks hence my confusion
I am actually doing exactly like you with Barclays and it just works. I also like that if required a physical card can be ordered as well for some saving accounts and they all obviously have their own account details.

I opted for Barclays Blue reward thing although I am not using cashback much, it pays Ā£7 monthly reward, there is Ā£3 account fee so Ā£4 per month net is not bad for doing things I have to do anyway. (2 coffees free every month )

More like 1.3 coffees for me :frowning:. Itā€™s great coffee though!

On a serious note, I think TSB are paying me Ā£5 a month for having two direct debits and payin in Ā£500 with no monthly fee

Well, the reward was not the thing which made me choose Barclays for now! (details in original post )

Thatā€™s right. And an extra Ā£5 per month (i.e. Ā£10 total), if you use your card more than 20 times. Thatā€™s hard to beat. But the offer is time limited (until the end of the year, I believe). Also Coop pay Ā£5 per month without fee (you need four direct debits), while other banks (e.g. NatWest and Santander) pay a percentage of your direct debit value, which may be more than Ā£5, especially if you have a family with all the usual utilities.

There are definitely current accounts that offer more cashback than Barclays Blue Rewards (especially if you are only getting the direct debit rewards), but if you are with them anyway, then itā€™s a good idea to activate them.

TSBā€™s offering is indeed pretty generous: in addition to these time-limited benefits of Ā£10 per month, you also get 3% annual interest on balance up to Ā£1500 and their credit card gives 1% monthly cashback on spending up to Ā£500. So can add up to almost Ā£20 per month in total.

If they didnt, they do now. No ā€œpenny sweepā€ but regular topups to your pot, yes.

I now have a number of named pots with standing orders doing all the work. Its not perfect but its an improvement over what I had before. We are literally exactly the same haha.

Except I did go with Starling due to the app convenience. Although it did immediately annoy me that I could only set one fixed payment to a pot per month (my car fund is managed as saving for car + monthly maintenance stipend)ā€¦ ā€œwhy cant i just be allowed to send various monthly savings to monthly pots!!ā€

Satlingā€™s clearly a more finished proposition, however like many I have read on hereā€¦ ā€œI just prefer Monzo and what they stand for and how they feelā€ ā€¦ so Iā€™ll return if I can.

I wonā€™t be hanging around forever though, if Monzo are taking 12 months+ to get close to core functions Iā€™d expect of a modern app based bank I think Iā€™ll end up just sticking with those that do rather than those that hope toā€¦

MONZA Yeah I agree with you - People all have different requirements.
I have lots of requirements & MONZO satisfy 99% of those banking requirements for me.
As LeonardH said they are a baby bank & need time to grow.
For me the way the MONZO staff handle my everyday needs & the swiftness & eagerness to which they reply to my needs - MAKES MONZO THE BEST - these no other bank I would rather be with.
For this reason Iā€™m happy to wait till all my requirements are met.
Give them time to grow & Iā€™m sure theyā€™ll meet all your reasonable requirements.
I LOVE MONZO - MONZO YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST.:heart::heart::heart:
MONZO IS THE BANK OF THE FUTURE.

Think it is nice to see a critical post regarding Monzo - as someone said earlier in the thread, it does become a bit of an echo chamber otherwise. Iā€™m curious to see what Monzo does next to make money. The income from overdrafts will only go some way to offset the cost of servicing current accounts - itā€™s not a charity after all. Iā€™d also be curious to see if any of the earlier posts have since switched back if Monzo has introduced functionality they thought was lacking.
