Personally I’d concentrate on getting Google Pay working on your phone, I think it is much better and more likely to happen
I was curious at what banks supported Samsung Pay and found the below table. There are some big banks that don’t support this but I was equally surprised at how many don’t support Google/Apple Pay too.
I thought that Apple/Google/Samsung Pay all used the same technology, so that if the terminal accepts contactless, then it doesn’t matter which version you’re using, they’ll accept it?
They all use EMV Contactless with optional Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method (allows you to use your device security in plate of PIN).
Samsung Pay does support magnetic stripe transmission (using an electromagnet to send magstripe data, which is different than the thing called contactless magstripe!) in some regions, but not in the UK.
Behind the scenes, it’s all Mastercard Digital Enablement Service for Mastercard issuers such as Monzo.
That’s not to say that the on-device implementations are the same though. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay all have different ways of storing the secure information used for payments and implementations of how/when they request authentication (within the requirements of the payment networks and laws). There will also be huge network to network or card to card differences in configuration or processing!
Given what I know about both payments processing, secure elements, and NFC on Android, it’s entirely plausible that Samsung Pay may work better than Google Pay on the newest Samsung devices, even just on the basis that Samsung would have been testing their own service on their own device constantly.
Having said all of that, there remain no plans for Monzo to support Samsung Pay at this time but please do continue voting at the top of this thread if it is something you want to see!
And this what is currently leaving Monzo behind in the race. They are ahead by a long shot with their app and account features (dd’s from a pot being just 1) but restricting what customers can use when other banks (I know not all) offer this as an option puts Monzo behind on this sort of thing.
@Monzo customers need this so please look at it soon and you can grow your customer base. It hurts seeing the likes of Starling constantly at the top year after year when they constantly innovate all the time, best bank for the past 3 years, native iPad app, support for a lot of bank systems (Google Pay / Apple Pay / Samsung Pay / Fitbit Pay). Wouldn’t it be nice to have Monzo up there just once?
The race for what? To add the most bloat to their app and burn all their money?
They’ve already said numerous times that there isn’t a much demand for it. So currently it would be foolish to spend loads of time and money to build and maintain this.
But there is a need for it by the number of people requesting it. It’s like saying to a Samsung user, here’s a phone but you can’t use it… To be the best, they need to support the options like others do. It’s freedom of choice.
Don’t fall into the trap of believing that what is said on here is what the wider userbase wants. We’re constantly reminded of this from Monzo and they’ve already commented to explain that in this case the community is wrong to believe this.
They know better than we do because they have access to data that we don’t.
You could use GooglePay, yes, but when people are invested in the Samsung ecosystem and you have a Samsung smart watch, that’s not an option. It’s like Apple really, only 1 choice available to you.
I am aware there is a closed topic about requesting support for Samsung pay. Not sure if this support is planned to be rolled out anytime soon, but it would be great for all Samsung users to be able to pay via Samsung instead of Google pay. Many of us have Samsung watches and can’t really make use of this feature due to this limitation.
I am Monzo member since October 2016 and it is 2022 and still no Samsung support:(
