Starling Bank Chat (Part 2)

:soon: has finally landed!

Although didn’t Anne say that she had something better? From an initial scan, this looks like bills pots but without taking from the main account if you’re short (which I think is probably not as good, but other people will prefer).

Where does it say this? It seemed very heavy on direct debits (and mentions standing orders in passing).

I think it’s a bit ambiguous. It does say about subscriptions but also then says direct debits.

I just edited my post after actually redownloading the Starling app. It was the use of the term ‘subscriptions’ in the blog post as @Revels alluded too after you.

My bad.

May just move all my stuff over to Starling now this is available, may hold off a few weeks though as I’ll need to be in the mood to manually move everything.

Here’s what the Starling app says:

It’ll be interesting to see if the payment is direct or if it does the current account shuffle like Monzo.

Unfortunately for me I still detest the design of the Starling home tab enough despite dark mode to make it a viable move for me as well as now being an avid user of VC’s on Plus but I can see this how this can be the nail in the coffin for :mondo: for those on the fence.

I’m intrigued to see this as well, judging by them saying this:

I’d imagine they won’t get the shuffle like us

However, they also say this further down:

But whether that’s a notification or a feed item is yet to be seen

Feels a bit dramatic. This is Starling coming towards feature parity - that’s excellent, but doesn’t do anything that the free Monzo account doesn’t so I’d have thought it wouldn’t have any demonstrable, large scale impact on movement been Monzo and Starling.

As ever, the competition is with the high street banks, so might accelerate movement from them.

What’s the reasoning that things like Netflix can’t be taken from a space/pot? It seems to be a consistent issue.

I did switch to Starling last month, this was the final feature I was missing, so glad it’s landed :star_struck:

Everyone in this thread has been saying it’s a nothing feature and nobody cares, so I wouldn’t have thought it will make much difference.

Maybe, Maybe not, i think it depends on your view point and what you want from your bank.

I’m a Monzo customer, for me, Monzo does more things I use regularly that Starling doesn’t do then then the other way round. A massive one of those things until today which has has a massively transformed the way I manage my money is Bills Pots. And unfortunately for Monzo, they’ve copy and pasted one of their best features.

Now whilst I remain a Monzo customer, I know a lot of people that hung on to Monzo because of Bills Pots but wanted Starling because of really key banking features such as PO Cash Deposits and Cheque Imaging etc. for those people it’s now a no brainer.

We can argue about whether we think they’re key features or not until were blue in the face but for a lot of people they are and like me a lot of people just want one app for their finances. that’s partly why I pay for Plus. For now I’ll keep using Starling for cash and cheques because it is a damn site easier but it does stop things from being all in one place, and ultimately this drives people to keep another account open which is gaining more and more feature parity.

Something to do with the fact unike SO’s and DD’s there’s notice that they’re going to be taken, nor is there any markers in the transaction data to show it’s recurring or recurring timeframe, it’s just a normal payment

Some subscriptions can be paid by direct debit, so they’d be included. Subscriptions where you have to pay through a debit or credit card wouldn’t.

Surely it’s not beyond tech to say “Any Netflix transactions come from this space”?

You’d of thought so

But then you have a list of names to maintain in the same way logos/names are managed now, and we see what happens when retailers change the content of the transaction and logos/names go awry, so that is a recipe for disaster the more you add to it.

Objectively speaking, and of course I am biased to a certain degree, but I do think it’s disappointing that the Starling implementation will decline a payment if the Space doesn’t have enough balance. Especially since bills can be variable. I like to put the exact amount I require for bills in a Bill Pot, and know that if the amount turns out to be slightly more, the main balance will cover the difference.

This seems like it could potentially cause a situation where you get a declined payment just because your Space ended up short by a few quid, which would be a poor customer experience.

I wonder if that’s a deliberate decision as it forces you to keep more money in Spaces “just in case”?
