Oh what a joke! Even if they get back to you by email and manually approve things, you shouldn’t have to go through such rigmarole just to open an account and remember, the video selfie thing has to be redone every time you log in on a new device! Not accessibility friendly at all.

This thread today is like watching the worst ever episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race. All of the theatrical tantrums and faux outrage and drama but without the fake breasts and complete confusion to my sexuality when I find myself incredibly attracted to the queens in full paint.

Unless @N26throwaway has their fake breasts on today, then it’s exactly like the show.

That’s logging in. It would obviously be fairly suspicious if someone came down with an all of a sudden lack of ability.

Lack of ability is a bit strong.

As @N26throwaway explained. They can/could do the first one. It would take it’s toll on them but they would fight that battle if it was only once.

But if it’s something you have to do each time you add the app to a new device, it becomes a bit OTT.

How often do you change device?

I’ve had to go through the process twice in four years.

Once on joining and recently on buying a new phone.

I believe @N26throwaway’s sign up selfie is a written down one as opposed to verbal - so I don’t understand why they’d approve that one but not the following sign in.

Or actually tbh I think here Starling are referring to the original, ‘sign up’ selfie as a ‘log in’ as well, so the one in question that they have rejected is indeed the first one that they’d then probably hold on file, so they’re not comparing this one to anything (other than the photo on the submitted ID). Of course the only person who can confirm this is @N26throwaway!

This was my first thought. I’d have imagined you’d have to log in the way you applied so if you applied that way and it was on your account that you’d done so it would be far less suspicious than someone suddenly doing so.

I don’t have a Starling account, I was just saying what @N26throwaway had said.

I’ve only logged back into Monzo once in 3 years, so I don’t think it would be much of an issue for me either, but we’re all different

It’s been a while since I did it, but I thought that as long as you had a working Starling account on one device, you can use that to verify yourself on additionally devices. I think I remember some sort of QR code system to login on a second device? (although I may be making that up)
I’ve only ever done the video selfie once and I’ve got it installed on both my iPhone and iPad.

So, as long as you didn’t do a fresh install on your iPhone and iPad at exactly the same time, you can use one device to verify yourself on the other device?

I’m an early Starling customer and used be able to change devices using their horrendous password thing. Last time I needed a video. I hated it with a passion. It’s one of a few reasons why I wouldn’t use Starling as my principle account.

It was to install the app. I made the error of a fresh OS install instead of an upgrade so I had to start again. I went through the security theatre then the app demanded a video selfie. It took an hour or so to process, even though when I said my name I used an informal version that wouldn’t have matched the details on file.

I hated every moment of it.

No one has really cracked the best security model yet, I think. Lots of places are trying to transfer risk to the customer through onerous requirements. A few feel a bit performative. And there are some, like Monzo, which are okay but rely on strengthening things like email with 2fa (but which then go a bit wonky when asking for selfies in the clear etc). Basically, no one has found the right balance yet, I think.

I must be the only person who doesn’t mind a quick video/selfie. Though I will admit it felt strange to do.

I can definitely see how it can be a trigger for some, but I am surprised how widespread it seems to be (on here at least).

It’s probably quicker for them to identify an account owner in this way compared with a fill in form :page_facing_up:

It doesn’t phase me either tbh, apart from when I decide to sign up to a fintech at 1am and watch back my tragic dishevelled selfie thinking good god, they’re going to think I sleep in a bush lol.

Strangely what freaks me out are telephone calls - don’t know why, I just hate them, and having to go through a phone conversation as a required step would absolutely put me off signing up to a bank, so I totally empathise with @N26throwaway.

I had a problem with Wise account. Was advised to call them.
Didn’t bother to spend hours on the phone (as it usually takes at other businesses) so dumped Wise :expressionless:
