Today I received a message from Straling, though I closed my account with them roughly two years ago this seems strange
What if you had moved house and no longer at that address?
I got one too. Closed my account a couple of years ago too. My amount is much higher… Weird.
They’ve been issuing refunds for active account holders over the last few months, looks like they are finally getting round to closed accounts.
I always wonder what exactly they do to check this. What didn’t they do at the time that they should have?
ChatGPT says…
That can include things like:
- Looking at the customer’s regular income and whether it was stable.
- Looking at regular committed spending (rent, mortgage, loans, childcare, utilities, etc.) where that information was available or reasonably obtainable.
- Assessing whether the customer would be able to repay the overdraft within a reasonable period, rather than relying on it permanently.
- Reviewing existing customers who were persistently overdrawn instead of continuing to allow them to incur interest month after month.
For Starling in particular, because they have access to customers’ current account activity, the regulator would expect them to make good use of that data. For example, if someone’s salary barely covered their essential bills and they were spending most of every month deep into an overdraft, that could indicate the overdraft wasn’t affordable, even if they had passed a conventional credit check.
The regulations don’t prescribe a checklist saying “you must ask these exact questions.” Instead, under the FCA’s rules, firms must make a reasonable creditworthiness assessment, which has two parts:
- Credit risk – is the customer likely to repay?
- Affordability – can they repay without causing themselves financial hardship?
The remediation suggests Starling believes that, for some customers, its processes for the second part may not have been robust enough.
Any WE benefits attached or just a name?
All WE get the president level benefits for car hire, so free second driver, a lot more included miles, cheaper miles if you go over free, much cheaper one way hire, and a few other things. Saved me about £1000 on a three week holiday.
I mean the additional ones apart from standard.
Very unlikely as I think it’s a free account.
That’s a good looking card
is anyone getting the new card designs though? ![]()
Not yet ![]()
New new card designs?
