I had someone at Sainsburys who thought that due to the colour of my Monzo card, that it was a gift card and not a debit card…
This shouldn’t matter, lost/stolen card liability for contactless rests with the issuing bank, not the merchant. So even if it was stolen, they’re not out the money - the issuing bank is.
They’re global rules, though there are local changes based on regulatory requirements in each region.
The card itself should tell the terminal if an offline transaction is allowed, that’s not her job to shout even if it was right. Insert/tap the card and see what happens.
That’s assuming the transaction even is offline, I know a lot of flights now have Wi-Fi and are using it for online authorisation of card transactions. Somehow I doubt easyJet is there yet.
@GalaxyMergirl Lady wasn’t happy about ‘prepaid’ card type, not offline aspect. And as @anon70107404 mentioned earlier, she was most likely wrong anyway.
I didn’t realise the gentry were working the airline aisles these days
Prepaid, per se, shouldn’t really matter. What matters is offline authorisation, which most prepaid cards don’t allow. They can do deferred online, but then the shop is out the money if there was nothing on the card.
This image immediately sprang to mind…
That’s the sort of information I was interested in… next time I’m in I will ask again whether they will accept contactless… currently using a different establishment
Have just been told that Monzo cards not accepted at the Bowler pub Ec1.not happy but paid with another card. Wish I’d walked out really.
Time to organise a Monzo flash mob to visit that pub. Order loads of drinks and then walk out.
I believe the correct response is to thank the staff member profusely and take your libation. When challenged merely state that it very kind of them to refuse payment and to maybe offer to return the favour another time. And don’t go back.
This non-acceptence issue seems to be more contacted with in like a mile radius of Monzo offices
All the Liverpool Street pasty shops etc and this pub should be visited by Monzo staff in a group for an eating n drinking session
This is really interesting. I’ve never had someone turn away my Monzo card. I’ve had it decline, but no one has ever told me they “don’t/won’t” accept it.
I did freak out College Catering when I rewrote the magstripe on an old bank card to have my College ID number and used it to pay internally…
I can confirm as of Tuesday the pasty shop in Liverpool steeet still do not want to accept the card, but it’s too late when you’ve already tapped it…
I just tweeted them (@EatOnTheMove), you should too… hopefully enough people complaining will make them re-train staff!
They’re pretty insistent that the manager is telling them not to accept “Monzo Bank” as their system does not process the payment.
When I went to use it the other day, whilst tapping he said “is that Monzo Bank sir?? We cannot accept this.” But I had already tapped
Definitely tweet SSP and write to them (their website was down so I couldn’t write to them). SSP is so expensive I almost never buy from them, but do you know if this is affecting other SSP outlets at Liverpool Street or other locations?
Delice de France is also affected at Liverpool Street, not tried the other SSP outlets there though, don’t usually go through there often, I will when I next do just to test it out.
Never had an issue with SSP outlets outside of Liverpool Street station though.
So it sounds like it’s an SSP manager at the station rather than just one brand supervisor. Very bad behaviour, indeed.
