Smart home security system

There was nothing boring about yesterdays one day international between England and Pakistan was far from boring. Personally I think cricket is a fan sight more interesting than a football match

I’ve found so far that it’s a mix of a number of different products. I have tried a number of cameras (Blink , Logi Circle and Nest) and have found the Nest cameras are for me the best. I have a few outdoor cameras and found the IQ one good but overkill for most needs, although having it trained on the front door has its advantages.
For lights and sensors i have stuck with Hue and have found them really good. I did try Ikea’s option but found it very fiddly and things like timers/routines were hard work.

Advocating Nest camera’s again.

Last Thursday, went to bed, heard someone walking & talking past the house (which is quite odd - I live in a quiet corner of the development), but thought nothing of it…

10 mins later notification pops up “Person spotted on Driveway”

Followed by the Nest Hello sending a notification. Turns out, he was trying his luck (on all the houses)… called the police, who missed him. Fast forward 10mins later and I’m watching him break into the building site, so police were called back. No idea if they caught him or not.

How’s the IQ night performance vs the outdoor cam? Thinking about switching the driveway cam up to an IQ, but obviously have to question it given the cost of the damn thing…

I never knew the IQ one was for outdoors? :open_mouth:

That kind of stuff creeps me out. I don’t have a camera so loads of people could have been doing this without me knowing

True, there’s certainly the viewpoint of… ignorance is bliss. But I’ve had randoms stroll into my back garden with their dogs (seems to have stopped once I post their mug shot on one of the community pages).

Others stroll up, looking at my garden as if they plan to buy my house (it’s a new development that’s partially under construction).

And then this guy. Which, I’d rather catch on camera, because if he did break into my house, or my neighbours… I’d want to help them catch him

I lived in a new development before moving recently and found people walking into my back garden. I caught a few people and apparently they thought it was a gate to an alleyway for a shortcut

I guess it depends on what used to be there before the houses were built… but still… that’s a bit of a reach

Good question … simple answer is i’ve not noticed much difference. They are in different location which of course makes it harder to compare, the outdoor one has street lighting to help/contend with, however i have not noticed any really major differences.

I guess I won’t bother then… might get another Outdoor cam and stick it somewhere else

That’s a really poor quality image for something so expensive

Its a cropped image… :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve gone with my own rolled solution, versus using a packaged cloud approach like nest etc.

I really like being able to handle the camera feeds myself, means I’m not locked into any one provider and their monthly packages. I’m also not vulnerable to any changes they make in how they deliver their stuff (as google have announced recently, integrating nest into the mothership and discontinuing the works with nest program).

You can get better cameras too for comparative prices. The nest cameras are decent, but they’re nowhere near the low light capability of the dahua’s, for instance.

I have all the same capabilities (cloud sync, remote viewing app, motion triggers, integrated into smart home etc), it’s just a bit more complex to setup and maintain. But if you’re tech savvy, patient and like geeking out, I’d recommend it!
