Yes - I wonder if this is possible. I’m forever forgetting about all of these…
Thanks. Much appreciated…
I imagine one problem is separating out the true recurring payments from the continuous authority from a place like Stripe that has just stored your card. Maybe there would have to be some way to manually delist a particular item from continuous payments?
Hi
So I’ve set up a recurring (although it is a one-off) payment to leave my account on 21 August for £100.
When does that £100 show as being not-available in my overall account balance? Should the balance forecast ahead including the recurring transaction that is scheduled, so that I know the “true amount” available to me in my account; or is that a forthcoming feature in the future sometime?
Was not sure how it works yet… or will work…
Thanks.
If memory serves me well, currently it will leave your account the day before.
Again, if I understand correctly, the pulse will show these payments when that functionality gets added to the app. But that is only how I remember it being explained.
Ok thanks - features yet to come then.
Whilst we’re talking about recurring payments, do new Direct Debits show up in the app or is it only after payments start being taken from the account? I have been steadily moving across Direct Debits to the new current account over the past few days but none are showing in the app yet.
A new tab appears in spending once a standing order or direct debit is set up.
Looks like this:
OK, I can see the Recurring Payments tab as it already has an entry I setup within the app to pay something monthly. I guess the Direct Debits just take a few days to complete processing before they show in the app.
Yes I’ve moved a few DD’s to Monzo and don’t have anything showing yet.
Would it be feasible to add a feature to allow us to mark a payment as a recurring payment? If Recurring Card Payments can’t be known about programmatically, being able to mark payments as recurring would be very useful, otherwise the Recurring Payments section will never really be accurate.
A solution for recurring card payments would be awesome. Surely if we can cancel them by contacting the bank there must be some information available.
Personally I would love to see if a payment has a continuous payment authorisation attached, then be able to cancel or add it to the recurring payments tab manually.
Even my energy provider uses continuous card payments these days and I still occasionally forget to cancel subscriptions before they go out because it’s a hassle to cancel them
One thing on recurring payments; I assume in time we’ll be able to suggest more friendly names for the DD/standing order/regular payment companies and icons? I’ve now got 6 standing orders or Direct Debits setup, but with the graphic-free largely capitalised list of payments it looks horribly “old bank style”
Yes we will
I agree that this would be a very useful feature. It’s not easy to know how many and what continuous authorisations you have setup on a card, and how to cancel them.
Hi @liamn no problem with what you’re saying but I think that the terminology that Monzo uses to describe recurring payments could do with updating.
The term “Standing Order” dates back to the 1960’s and 1970’s to describe a regular payment made within a bank or between banks. Originally these were paper diary cards we used to remind the bank clerk to initiate a payment (Yes I’m that old!) . This ended up being automated but was essentially a BACS based (3 day clearance) system for payment of a regular sum within the UK.
What I know Monzo is offering is more sophisticated. Not only will it cover regular domestic payments but potentially international ones as well. The payment goes via Faster Payments not BACS - a key difference with Standing Orders. It’s instant not legacy.
Calling these “Recurring Payments” not only provides a more understandable description but separates these from the slow and traditional payment processes the legacy banks use. Please can Monzo not use the term Standing Order. It’s old and legacy not what the recurring payment system Monzo offers.
Thanks.
In terms of the frequency of recurring payments the App only seems to offer a limited number of choices. Daily, Weekly, Monthly or yearly.
This is a massively retrograde step compared to what was offered 40 years ago by the legacy Banks. Payments could be set up for a particular weekdays (Monday, Tuesday etc.), fortnightly, three weekly, four weekly, monthly on a particular date, quarterly, on quarter days, six monthly and annually.
While I can’t see the need for daily payments (unless conditional on say balance) I hope the payment frequency is in its infancy and capable of development. Both to increase frequency options and to be conditional on say balance and other external triggers. E. G. Pay money if share price of A corp is below x.
Hopefully an area where Monzo has big plans to do something inspirational.
Since the inception of Faster Payments in 2008, the majority of Standing Orders should be sent through the Faster Payments network as opposed to BACS.
Faster Payments offer us three types of Payment:
- Single Immediate Payments
- Forward-dated Payments
- Standing Orders

Hi, today I tried to move my standing orders and DD to Monzo. Few suggestions/issues below:
Currently, once you have set up the recurring payment, you cannot amend it (i.e. change the amount etc). You can only cancel it and then you have to add the sort code and account number again to set up the recurring payment. It would be great if we had the ability to amend the recurring payment. Another thing that would be good is if you could add recipients so you don’t have to enter the account number and sort code every time you want to make the payment/recurring payment - less chance of human error.
Also, there is no “Every X weeks” option. For e.g. “Every 4 weeks”. I currently have this option in Lloyds. It would be great if this option is available in Monzo.
Thank you to all the Monzo team for striving to make Monzo the best bank in the world.
