Phone number linked to account

Not saying it’s right but this is also how Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok etc. all work - when the app asks if you want to allow access to your contacts it uploads the selected contacts (or all if you select them) to the service. Monzo isn’t doing anything that these services are not already doing and many of those would also allow the other party to see your full name and also private message you which is potentially much worse…

A couple of things:

  • This is not true. Both people I know were surprised, I don’t know how else I can communicate that.
  • Even if true, a third party has to give permission to see my number in their Monzo - it is not me giving that permission, it is the viewer that supplies their contact list containing the name of the person whose ID is being revealed, not the other way around

I am reaching the end of my interest in this discussion. I don’t need anyone to confirm that there is a problem, or reassure me that there is not.

I have been in IT for decades and these issues are stamped out quickly generally. It only takes one person to point out a problem, does not matter how many people say it’s fine.

Two people have reported to me that their names have been revealed without their consent or explicit permission. The counter examples cited do nothing to alleviate that.

I thought these messages were getting to Monzo, so I have messaged them in the app instead.

Working in IT doesn’t mean that you know about security; they’re different things.

As somebody who used to lead IT Security for a large organisation I can confidently say that this would have been the least of our issues nowadays.
