I understand what they’re trying to do, I’m just lost in the conversion aspect, which on the face of it - setting the Monzo card to USD looks like trying to send USD TO USD which doesn’t make sense in my mind.
Wise is the way forward here.
PayPal charge you to withdraw to a USD account? Wise give you USA bank details to withdraw to based on the link I provided, so would be a casual withdrawal to native currency, then through wise, convert to GBP (unless the wise USD-GBP fee is what you’re referring to).
When they add the card to PayPal I guess they’ve been asked what currency the card supports.
If they pick GBP, then PayPal will recognise it as a card with a different currency to the balance and will only allow you to withdraw in GBP after they’ve made the conversion and they’ve taken a markup.
If they pick USD, then PayPal should in theory just send the money via MasterCard to the account in USD.
There’s no conversion, I think you’ve added a step in here that doesn’t exist and that’s what’s confusing you.
Monzo would receive the USD and convert it direct to GBP - i.e. the same as a refund overseas or a betting site withdrawal.
The problem here is that PayPal seem to be blocking this for some reason or another.
Are there any other ways you could perhaps get the money to your account? I’m thinking perhaps via buying shares or crypto in USD and selling in GBP, not something I’ve tried, but in theory it could work.
What step do you think i missed, have you tried the withdrawing to your card in USD before?
They said it’s from my bank’s end. And yeah I’m i am off crypto

Its not from Monzo’s end. PayPal are talking rubbish and trying to dismiss your request by blaming Monzo.
PayPal’s systems simply recognises your cards BIN or Sort code/account number (depending how you send it) as a GBP card/account and refuses to send money that is not GBP to it. That is PayPal technology on its servers. Monzo has nothing to do with it as they are not interacting with PayPal until PayPal has sent the money.

The card withdraws fine when it’s set to GBP but once it’s set to USD, it won’t work again.
You cannot withdraw/add any other currency to Monzo.
You surely can set card to what you want on paypal. Solely just for paypal
Well so far after reading this thread the evidence is stacking up as no you can’t.
I have been trying to move USD in my UK payPal account to my Wise USD account for weeks and failing miserably. Unfortunately, PayPal does not recognise Wise "Virtual "Accounts.
I would be grateful if anyone can put me right on this.
However, I have moved Euros from my UK PayPal account to my Wise account without issue!!!
Sounds like PayPal needs to update a lot.
As they’re regulated, possibly worth putting a complaint in.
