When sending a payment to a previously used destination, I noticed that in the last year or so that the payment reference is no longer automatically filled. I think there should be a checkbox option “Save this reference for next payment” when making a payment.

If you could try:
Payments tab → see all payees → Payee you want to edit → edit → edit → Reference

Thanks. Am I going crazy or did it used to remember the last reference automatically? I still think this would be more discoverable if there was a checkbox on the payment screen offering to save it as default. I’ll be honest, the “edit” workflow for this doesn’t feel intuitive for some reason.

Only if you set the reference when creating the payee.
