Thank you for the insights and quick revert. I was asking because Starling has a feature called “card control” where the card or certain features of it (ie. contactless payments, atm withdrawals) may be disabled by the user temporarily. Wondering if Monzo has a similar feature.
Consider this extra friction for those with spending addictions; many legacy banks will offer this proactively to help with spending, and a few of my friends have this for exactly that reason (they’re with TSB, and it’s a sticking point for them switching to Monzo)
You can vote for Monzo to build this feature here:
No, Monzo doesn’t have this feature. You can only freeze your card, so preventing all card transactions.
Don’t forget that if your card is stolen, it’s effectively Monzo’s cash which is being spent. As long as you have acted responsibly, any fraud will be refunded.
Agreed. This is a good feature to help with spending. The downside though of Startling is not being able to request for an ATM withdrawal increase or decrease either temporarily or permanently. Their cap is £300 per day then will refresh at midnight.
Why can I not request a non contactless Monzo card?
Every single major bank offers the option to have a non-contactless card and yet Monzo does not…
A few people have asked for it,
I guess it’s not something monzo are focusing on,
Although they already have regular, joint and 3 different coloured plus cards so it shouldn’t be too hard to add a new option.
And every one of those new cards took lots of time and money to design, programme and verify
I cannot see them doing so unless it becomes something much more regularly requested
For the sake of interest, perhaps the OP can describe their reasons behind not wanting a contactless card?
I would like the option to switch off the functionality on the app.
Would be interested to hear too, especially since this is the way everything is going now. EG high value contactless.
If it’s security, then there are plenty of things the OP can do as well
Also very important to know that contactless is fully protected. As long as you are not negligent with your card or pin then you will get any money back which had been lost as a result of contactless fraud
I have a non contactless TSB card as I keep it with my Oyster card wallet. It prevents double charging.
I have a work Oyster card so there’s no option to combine with a credit or debit card.
It’s never been an issue requesting non contactless with TSB or Santander from my experience.
Pretty much every bank offers a non contactless the only ones that don’t are Metro, Monzo, Starling, Tesco and Virgin (which will likely change after they finish integrating to CYBG).
You can always take a pair of scissors to the card. Opposite end to the chip just cut into it about 10mm. The antenna runs around the periphery of the card and cutting into it will destroy the contactless operation.
What effect if any it will have on the functionality as an EMV card after that I can’t say. The microcontroller should only try and drive when it’s responding to commands over NFC, but YMMV.
You can vote for this feature here:
Make a small hole through the monzo logo - this disables the antenna permanently without affecting the stripe or the chip and pin.
How about this for people who are worried about the security
Although I’d imagine they’d have to charge for these due to the extra cost of having the fingerprint on the card
I’d rather monzo offer a card with no contactless than this. Costs more for them and with the option for mobile payment which would be more secure, those will be better options IMO
Why do people need the ability to turn it off, are there concerns of fraud or something?
Instead of butchering the card a simple RFID pouch will do it
You even get people with contactless cards insisting on using chip and pin for small value because “I don’t trust contactless cards”. I find myself wanting to say “well get rid of it then”
