Optional Non-Contactless Cards

I think this would be a really regressive step. I have four RFID cards in my wallet: TfL, Monzo, work ID and union card. Getting rid of RFID in one of them doesn’t solve anything. In fact, I just put all cards except my Oyster on one side and then just tap in/out on the tube using the left hand side of my wallet.

Punching a hole in your card will probably see it rejected by shops who think it’s been invalidated by someone for some reason.

It may seem like a backward step, but it’s accommodating for the privacy-conscious and can be seen as a way to give users more control over their money. Even with soft disabling through a switch, the card can still be skimmed. The RFID wallet or defacing the card are the only physical methods.

I personally have no use for disabling contactless and I am in love with it, but I see where OP is coming from in a way.

Just curious that’s all  but I don’t understand how it gives them more control over their money or makes them less susceptible to skimming.

RFID sleeves are soooo cheap and would solve all their concerns.

Privacy conscious people have much more to worry about using a smart phone that tracks their data - and doing all their banking on that phone.

How many cases of contactless skimming have been recorded in the history of contactless bank cards?

To skim, you’d need to be within a few centimetres of someone’s wallet. AND they would need to have only one contactless card in their wallet (if you have two or more, it won’t read).

I guess the opposition to RFID sleeves is: “if I never use contactless, why should I need an accessory?”. Again I personally disagree but that seems to be the position.

The problem is there would have to be enough demand there to get a batch of cards manufactured. I’d imagine that it is a minority of monzo customers who want this. There’s no point getting the plastics manufactured if they are just going to sit in a vault gathering dust due to the small amount ordered.

Is there away to corrupt them? Or wipe the NFC chip? Maybe the vendor could just run the card over an NFC write machine to wipe it or similar and

Once it’s written it can’t be changed due to the protection that is in place to stop tampering. Could not write the Contactless data in 1st place if there was something in monzos file telling us but not sure where would stand with mastercard having the contactless symbol on the cards if they wern’t contactless

True, but getting Monzo to reverse transactions can take 6 weeks. I know it is MasterCard’s policy, but it makes the experience poor. With a contact only card the issue of this type of fraud is eliminated.

Every time I’ve reported fraud to Monzo, they’ve refunded the fraudulent transactions straight away.

As a big Apple Pay user I am a big contactless user.

However, I still need to carry one card just in case I meet a 20th Century vendor who hasn’t gone contactless or even one who only takes cash so I need to visit an ATM. Neither of these options require my physical card to support contactless so I’d like a card that is non-contactless so if it is lost or stolen it can’t even be used for a small number of small transactions before contactless security kicks in, or I block the card.

It’s the banks job to worry about stolen/lost cards used contactlessly not the customer.

Ignoring all transaction notifications each time it’s used, with the SCA the most it’ll ever deduct is £100 which Monzo will then credit IF someone had found your lost card and trys it on, or purposely nicks it and before you notice and freeze it or Monzo freezes it.

I’m not keen on contactless but I freeze my card when not needed in the app.
Temp measure I know but it works.

Best would be if they allowed a custom contactless limit that you could set at £5 in my case

Would a RF blocked wallet be an easier option for you?

It’s the lack of verification and not the cloning that bothers me. A custom user set limit would be nice as it gives users a choice.

I just freeze and unfreeze the card as required.
I already have a RF wallet as it’s solid metal (card holder)
Makes more sense than non contactless cards as it is quicker when you want only a coffee from McDonald’s at 3am before work.

I wouldn’t personally need this, but I am aware that many people are concerned about using non-contactless cards. Either they should be properly reassured, or contactless cards should be rolled out to allay their concerns.

Contactlessless surely?

Thanks for alerting me to my mistake, @lpoolrob. I’ve now corrected my post!

How about cardboard cards?

Obviously they’d need to be reinforced etc. but could be great for when you need them etc. and could easily be recycled.
