I am coming to the UK on a skilled worker visa as a non-EEA citizen. I wanted to know if I need my BRP to open my account or can I open with just a passport and/or entry clearance visa? If yes, how does Monzo know that I am a resident and not just a visitor?

directly and ask them are you capable to open an account or not yet
You need to be a UK resident and have a UK addresss.
Monzo won’t know if you’re a visitor or not, they’ll do their own checks and open an account for you if they are satisfied.
You’ll only need your passport to verify your identity.
I’d also recommend waiting until you’re in the UK to apply for your account
