Quick question: have you purposefully excluded the merchant view from the Targets tab, and from the excluded from spending section on the Spending tab? (I ask because Iāve excluded my credit card repayment category but would still like to look at the monthly spending trends by merchant - I have two credit cards).
Can someone help me understand what is the (new) default behaviour supposed to be with categories and Flex?
Is the Flex (loan) amount supposed to be categorised correctly with repayments considered as transfers?
If so then how does this help with Trends? Trends wouldnāt show that I am repaying a purchase each month as it would be a transfer but the initial purchase would be tagged as shopping for example. That wouldnāt be accurate as I didnāt spend anything on day 1 as it was Flexed - instead I would be doing monthly shopping payments until the loan has been paid back.
Yes, I think what you say is the new default behaviour. I still canāt get used to it, but manually changing everything to reflect what I want - a Flex purchase recognised as spending when I make the repayment, not when I make the initial purchase - is just too much hard work
Itās not really doing what I hoped it would. And I think itās not working as itās meant to.
Let me explain:
Iāve turned this feature on. Amazing. Now I can see the two transactions that I couldnāt before because they were directly with the Flex virtual card.
But when I go back on time, Iāve got a bunch of duplicate transactions. Thatās because during the great Flex transactions reset scandal I went through and manually recategorised them.
I have a think and decide that actually I want my original transactions from my current account to be the ones that count for Flex, not the Flexed ones. Thatās because sometimes I Flexed things days or weeks later meaning that the dates would be wrong.
So I go and try and reset the Flex categories to Transfers to sort it out.
And then all hell breaks loose
If I recategorise a transaction from the Flex non-feed, it also changes the original transaction in my current account feed.
If I change the first Flex repayment category, it also changes the first repayment to the new category - but not the last two.
If I change the first repayment category back it sticks. But if I then change the current account category of the original transaction it also changes the Flex category - and the whole thing starts again.
Basically, I want to be able to (manually) have the originally current account category as a normal category and the one I see in Trends. I want the Flex account category to be able to be set to Transfers - or another category I exclude. And the repayments to be set to my Credit Monthly category which I already exclude from Trends.
But currently there seems to be no way of not double counting Flex and current account transactions.
(Iām off to have a little cry. I know itās a bug and will get fixed. But itās been that sort of a day).
In practice, I think this is how it should work with them coupled now? If you make the original transaction in March, and moved it to Flex in April, the flex refund (to your current account) and the new Flex transaction are both in April and they net out since theyāre in the same category. So when looking at your current account and your flex together, your spend would show as in the month you originally made it?
Ah, so the idea is that the refund nets off the new transaction on the Flex account?
That kinda makes sense. Iād have to go through and recategorise everything again, but thatās okay.
Iām struggling with the old first immediate repayment, though. That shouldnāt be linked though, should it? It should just retain whatever category is it now when I change the Flex/current account category?
Longer term, itād be super helpful to have a proper Flex feed, and the ability to jump from the Flex transaction to the current account one (and vice versa). Itād really help to manage them properly!
Unfortunately this is still not working for me. All my flex transactions are still getting accounted for in trends so the overall trends calculation is wrong (balances out to zero). There is no option in monzo labs for me to change this. Is there another development coming?
It seems to be working differently for me, all my flex payment transactions were before this change classified into categories. After this change, even when I add the transactions using flex by choosing that on the menu of accounts the categories are not feeding from the flex payment.
What happens is that all my spending or only the instalment Iāve paid using flex is now not showing on my trends, even when adding the Flex account.
Instead, the full cost of the transaction is now shown which does not reflect at all reality to my spending.
Iām not sure how to recovery these transactions as nothing is making much sense after this update.
Hi Adam,
Iām having an issue with Monzo Premium that I wanted to discuss with you. When I āflexā a transaction, itās being categorized the same way as the original one. As a result, these two transactions cancel each other out in my monthly trends, making my spending analysis inaccurate. For instance, if I flex a Ā£200 clothes purchase, itās not accounted for at the end of the month. Iāve subscribed to Monzo Premium for the ability to create custom categories, but this isnāt working out as expected. Can you please help me with this issue?
If you tap on the top left in Trends you can add Monzo Flex to your selected accounts, which will include your Flex spend to Trends for you and hopefully solve your issue
I have tried this and it does not let me select flex. Would it be possible to have a quick call and screenshare with someone who can help? Keen to get this sorted asap.
What app version are you on? Youāll need to be on 5.9.0 or higher for Flex to show up
Make sure youāre on either balance or the spending tabs to toggle it on the menu, with targets (which has a different set of selected accounts) you need to go through the target edit flow to add it
